The Student Room Group

Will having anxiety on my medical records stop me from becoming a paramedic?

I have been suffering with anxiety for a number of years but have always carried on by saying I’m fine with plenty of smiles. Now I am starting to think about applying with My local ambulance hub as a student paramedic or going to university I’m starting to worry that if I go to my doctors to get diagnosed this will stop me doing my dream job. I know I need help but I would be so devastated that I couldn’t be a paramedic if this is the case I wouldn’t go to the doctors.
It would have an effect if it was not under control and prevented you doing the job.

It is better imo to go to the GP or seek some self help and start to put in place routines and targets that will help you deal with the anxiety better. When you have an emergency then colleagues and patients will be relying on you to be calm and do your job rather than be anxious and paralysed with fear.

It is much better to deal with it now before it gets more entrenched ad to learn the reasons why it happens and strategies to get out.

Ps if you have severe anxiety then they may ask you about it and investigate whether it will significantly impact your ability to do the course or job, so imo its best to get it sorted now, so they can see you are responsible enough to be handling it or have it under control.
