Just curious as to the reasons for the huge demand for courses in medicine, compared to say, enigneering or physics or maths etc.

Why are so many wanting to apply into medicine?

cos loads of ppl wanna be doctors. its a respectable career which is relatively well-paid and allows ppl to do something really worthwhile as well.

And noone wants to do maths/physics really, since most people find them really boring subjects.

IMO, engineering is actually quite popular, not on the medicine level of course....

We are already seeing a massive shortage in doctors due to many people not wanting to do medicine.

Those who do qualify tend to shy away from various aspects and subsequently anyone wanting to be a Spinal Surgeon will find themselves in big demand once qualified.

Afraid not, enginnering demand seems to have steadied out but it isn't popular at all (psychology, geography and law all wipe the floor with it). However to get approved by the institute of chartered engineers (ie for the degree to be worthwhile) universities have to prove that their engineering student intake each yr is of a fairly high quallity (averaging around BBB's). It's never going to be an easy option but it's far far from popular...very useful and worthwhile though.

Doesn't medicine have quite a high drop out rate? People see being a doctor as glamourous career and often think that medicine is the only respectable science. However, when they begin studying it they find it's not really for them/ they're not enjoying it as much as they thought they would.
