In what context are you mentioning hydroseres?
Reply 2
in terms of a plant succesion

:ditto: Depending on the context you may not even need to bother with a definition.

Also, if you're applying for ecology or something equally specialist, I should imagine the admissions tutor reading your personal statement is likely to already know the definition, so clarification won't be required.

my application is for physical geography btw

Ok. So what was the sentence preceding what you hope to insert as a definition?

is the study of a hydrosere

i was then putting a very short definition which i dont wish to get wrong!

Well to answer your question, the correct definition would be a succession beginning in a freshwater environment.

But I still don't see why it's necessary to define it. Anyone reading the PS is likely to know what it is already, and a definition would just eat your characters :s-smilie:
Don't define words you are using in the statement. It is patronising (and therefore potentially irritating) to the admissions tutors - they know perfectly well what it is.
