Swansea university or Edge Hill university

I am from Manchester, and I have an offer to start ODP at both unis
Please can people help and give me your honest opinions.
Where would be the place to go for student life and get a good university experience?
How is the public transport in both areas as I don't drive?

Cool. First thing - I think you need to post on specific forums for that career path. There are some general guidelines as to which universities are better than others but they absolutely do not apply for very career specific courses especially in medically related fields. You want to make sure the course is good, the training is good and has favourable links with employers.

Then consider which place would suit you better to live. My gut reaction is that Swansea would be a much more interesting place to study - but its a bit of a trek from Manchester.

@swanseajack1 - any specific knowledge?
Firstly Swansea is one of the best places for medicine in the UK and has many options like Genetics and Applied Medical Sciences in their medical schools but I know nothing about this specific subject. All medicine school subjects are held in the traditional Singleton campus. I dont know anything Edge Hill but I suspect it is on the outskirts of Liverpool so likely to have outstanding transport and nightlife facilities which will probably about the best anywhere.

As far as Swansea is concerned there are regular train links between Swansea and Manchester and London. Both are hourly services, The Manchester train is a small one and takes 4 hours via Crewe and Cardiff and has loads of stops. Once here there are regular services linking the station and campus. The buses from Campus to city take about 10 minutes and go about every 10 minutes day time. There is a night bus but it isnt every night which links both campuses and the city cenre.

In terms of nightlife Wind Street is very well known but obviously being a much smaller city than Liverpool there wont be as much variety. There are a couple of theatres and cinemas and there has been a new Arena opened this year.

I'm not 100% sure but I don't think that transport links from Ormskirk are very good unless you drive. It seems to take around 2 hours by train to Manchester and involve a change of train, or an hour to Liverpool - also requiring a change. Fine for a day out or visiting family but not really good for nightlife.

There is hospital right next to the Campus but the main one including A&E is about 7 miles away. This is on a direct route from the campus and goes through the city centre. If you are likely to have to travel there I wouldnt stay on the Bay or the student village. I would either stay on Singleton campus or in one of the newer private halls in the city near the station. Buses stop close by to Oldway and Seren for easy links. The bus stops over the road from both a minutes walk away.

Swansea has suffered due to covid like elsewhere and major stores like Debenhams and Top Shop have closed. Next has moved to the Morfa shopping centre about 2 miles from the city and Sports Direct has moved to Parc Tawe about 10 minutes walk from the city.

i enclose some videos to help you.

Hello @SAVEafrica

It is great to hear you are considering Edge Hill for your studies!

Having just finished my First Year at Edge Hill I was in a similar situation to you in deciding which university was right for me last year, so I will do my best to tell you what made me decide that Edge Hill is the university for me:smile:

Edge Hill is a gorgeous and well-connected campus university located in Ormskirk. It has a very welcoming and supportive community feel. As soon as I stepped onto the campus I felt immediately at home. I have had a fabulous university experience so far at Edge Hill. There are lots of university events on campus at the Students Union as well as the clubs and bars in Ormksik town centre such as Alpine and Styles which are always full of students. There is also always the option of going into Liverpool for nights out if you want something a little different. We have over 70 clubs and societies to get involved in. Edge Hill is an incredibly supportive and friendly environment supporting all your social and academic needs.

The university is situated a short walk from Ormskirk town centre but there is a free university bus that runs from the campus to the town center every 20 minutes. There is also the option of getting the bus to surrounding areas (for example Southport). There is a train station situation very close to the bus station in Ormskirk meaning you can easily get the train anywhere you like, such as a direct train to Liverpool. I have family and friends in Manchester so often visit via train which is very easy (I tend to just change in Preston).

Our Operating Department Practice (ODP) degree is approved by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) ensuring you have all the practical experience and skills you need, spending half your time on placement at NHS trusts and private organisations. After you graduate, you’ll be eligible to register as an Operating Department Practitioner with the Health and Care Professions Council and you’ll be able to start working as soon as you have registered with HCPC. You can choose to study this course at Edge Hill’s Ormskirk campus or St James’ Manchester city centre location - meaning you could have the option to stay closer to home if you wanted!

I would highly recommend Edge Hill for all these reasons. It was voted the Modern University of the Year highlighting its continued commitment to improving the student experience, quality of teaching, and facilities.

We have an online platform you can use to chat with current students on a one-to-one basis which I will link here if you have any questions or would just like a chat:smile: I would also hugely recommend attending one of our Open Days if you haven't already the next one is the 17th of September.

I hope this is helpful!

Hi @ajj2000

Just to let you know there is no change required from Ormskirk to Liverpool and it takes around 35 minutes from Ormskirk to Liverpool Central and to Manchester it's about an hour and a half

That compared to 10 minutes bus from the campus to the city centre and nightlife
Hi @SAVEafrica

Katie did a fab job explaining the Ormskirk campus, so I thought I would just add on about the Manchester Campus too just in case it was something you would want to consider. As Katie mentioned, you can choose to study ODP at either the Ormskirk campus or the Manchester campus.

The Manchester St James campus is located on Oxford Street in the heart of Manchester City centre. Most students tend to also live in student accommodation in the city centre too, so if you are looking a city-based experience this is an option for you. You would have access to all the public transport in Manchester, as there are frequent bus services and two major train stations at Victoria and Piccadilly, these have trains which can take you anywhere in the country. You would also have all the nightlife, clubs and bars that Manchester offers. I don't know the specifics of them myself but I do know from friends that there are plenty of bars and clubs to go out and socialise in which are a walk or a short bus journey away from their accommodation.

At the St James campus too you will have completely modern facilities to be working and studying in. The campus runs drop-in afternoons where you can book a slot to have a tour of the facilities and speak to lecturers. While you're visiting the campus, you can also see Manchester and the transport links and nightlife for yourself. You can book your place on a drop-in afternoon here if you would like.

I hope this helps give you a wider view of the different experiences Edge Hill can offer you for ODP. Best of luck with your future studies!
