It means that you'll obtain a qualification, just not the one you were studying towards - it'll be a lower / lesser qualification.
For example, you may have been studying for a honours degree, like a BSc (Hons) or BA (Hons), but instead are being awarded an ordinary degree, like a BSc or a BA.
It seems odd that you haven't apparently been told what exit award you'll receive.
