History or English Lit. A level

I am deciding which one would be more useful to my future plans. I know they are similar in certain aspects, just weighing up which one will be better.

Which a level is seen as more impressive to unis?
Which one is more difficult?
Advantages/disadvantages?
Hey!
I take both alevel english lit and history so I should be able to help you out with this!!

Firstly, I wouldn't say one is more impressive to unis than the other - both are well received by unis due to their critical nature and the coursework aspect - both show off to unis that you are able to meet deadlines and work independently on a subject you are passionate about, so it doesn't really make much of a difference which you take in terms of university.

Secondly, they are both difficult, but in different places, so in my opinion for example, english lit content is much easier to understand than history content, however, strangely i find history essays much easier than english lit - the markscheme is really picky with literature, whereas it is less so with history!

Lastly, advantages and disadvantages... i mean, both are VERY time consuming, especially history in terms of content, and it is often difficult to know how to effectively revise english lit, however, I would say that english lit is good for a person who likes debating and having in class discussions as this is very much the dynamic of lessons in my school, and history is good for a person who is less into the full blown in class debating and is more interested in the cold hard facts and then judging what they think about them... for me, I would say that english is about your feelings and reactions and history is about your logical thoughts, so it really kind of comes down to the sort of person you are!

I hope this has helped at least a little, i tried to play devils advocate as both really are excellent alevels and i would recommend both! Let me know if you have any further questions and i'll do my best to answer them as best as i can!!

What do you want to do at uni?
That may help you in your decision.
They are both decent, well regarded subjects. There isn't one of them that's seen as better than the other. They both might be a bit time consuming, but are probably worth it.
Hi! I take A Level History, I’m in year 13.
Both history and English lit are regarded very highly by universities.

History is extremely difficult, in terms of the huge amount content. It’s insane. Gives me multiple breakdowns, I can’t sleep tonight because of it
The only thing that keeps me going is that I find the 2 topics (Britain 1951-2007 and Tsarist and Communist Russia 1855-1964) really interesting so I’m willing to spend hours every day studying it.

My biggest advice would be to look at the specific topics that your college chooses for History and the books you would study for English Lit, investigate them a little bit and see if you find them interesting. At the end of the day each a level will be challenging so the most important way to get through is to at least find it a little bit enjoyable.

Hope it helps!

Hey, thank you so much, I will definitely look into it more and see what peaks my interest more. Hope all goes well for you!

Wow thank you so much! This has helped a lot. From what I've read history seems more suited to me. Just wondering what the exams involve like questions, marks etc? i know each exam board slightly differs but I just want to gain a general view on it. Also, I know that you most likely dont take these exact subjects but do you think history taken along with biology and psychology is a manageable load? Thank you for your help so far!

Hi,
I take both using the AQA specification as a home-educated student
History: Industrialisation and the People; as well as, Democracy and Nazism
English: Othello, Gatsby, Pre-1900 Poetry, Spies, All My Sons & Skirrid Hill

As I think others have mentioned, both are very time-consuming as there's lot's to learn - however if you enjoy the subject it can actually be quite fun. I think either are equally impressive to unis, so I would personally choose whichever one you enjoy the most as I think to get the best out of these subject you have to have a passion for them.

English:
Focuses mainly on analysing the texts in their context (which was great for me as I love seeing how texts reflect their time period - also with the element of history that is involved there's a bit of both in it). You analyse 6 texts (mixture of Plays, Novels and poetry) and have 2 Unseen questions too. Compared to the History essay, there's much more creative freedom and you can (if you like to) write in a more flowery manner. It's good if you enjoy reading as wider reading can really help with your answers, as well as having the ability to analyse poetry (something which I detested until A Level)

History:
I would say is slightly more content-heavy than English, however, can be really really interesting (especially the coursework) as you can delve deeper into topics that interest you to learn more. You focus on two period, and although there is some social history, be warned that (at least for my topics) there's a fair bit of politics involved too - but - I actually found (after many hours trying to wrap my head around the victorian political system haha) that having the political basis actually really aided understanding of what was happening socially. The exam is much more structural and a "historian" voice is preferred to the more flowery tone of english - you have a line of argument and back this up with facts - some people find this easier, some find it harder. It's good if you have a keen interest in your periods (I'm actually planning on taking history at uni, the victorian period being something i'd love to specialise on) and it doesn't hurt having a good memory too as being able to recite dates and statistics can really help in the exam

I'd be happy to answer any questions you have for either - good luck in choosing

Hey! Sorry for the late reply, I've been really busy lol, I have mocks coming up which is so stressful!

For history there's 30 mark sources questions and 25 mark essay questions based off of a statement, and for English, it's one essay question (not sure how many marks... it's either 25 or 30) per text that you are studying! As I briefly mentioned in my first reply, both history and english lit involve coursework - history is a historical investigation of a one hundred year period, and english lit is a critical study of two texts, one of which has to be pre 1900. Both are worth 40% of your alevel, and the other 60% is exam. This is based off of my exam board, which is aqa

Funny you should say that, because I actually take psychology as well! Psychology (at least for my exam board) doesn't involve any coursework and is fully exam, so in terms of that, psychology isn't all that time consuming as all you have to do is revise for exams instead of doing a whole essay of independent study too, so it's good to take with history, which is, as I mentioned earlier, a part coursework part exam subject. Psychology does involve A LOT of content though, so as long as you can manage that, you will be fine! (I'm very biased, but I think psychology is an INCREDIBLE subject, infact it is my favourite and it's what I want to go on and do at university, so I will never stop recommending it!) From what I've heard of biology, it is a very good one to take with history and especially psychology, so I think you're all good to take those together!!

Hope this helps
