Which university feels most 'comfortable'

I have received offers for Physics with a Foundation year from Manchester, Birmingham and York. I have bad anxiety so the 'feel' of a place is quite important to me. I'd like to choose somewhere welcoming where the staff are supportive, there is a community feel among the students, and you can still make friends if you don't drink. I'm worried about Manchester and Birmingham because they seem to have a reputation for not having very safe surroundings, and I don't want to have to go to unsafe places in order to socialise enough to make friends. I've been to open days at Manchester and York. I loved York but I don't think I should rule out Manchester and Birmingham because of that, and Manchester seems fantastic for the course. Could anyone tell me their experiences of these unis, or anything you've heard from other people?
