Im stuck which uni to choose

I want to study psychology at one of universities but im not sure which one. last year i went to bath spa but had to leave cos i was too far from home.
i applied through clearing and got into reading university, oxford brookes, leicester (not de monfort) and anglia ruskin!
each of these universities have offered psychology or psychology combined honours yet i'm still confused as to which one is best.
i need to have a decent amount of help available - lecturers who will actually give you the time of day lol
which one has the safest and nicest city as well as good en-suite accomodations?
Hello,
I'm one of the student ambassadors here at Coventry University.
I'd recommend looking into the areas that the universities reside in, if crime and safety is a priority for you, I'd recommend you looking online at the Gov website to see what they say about that particular area in terms of the area, as well as what is closer to home for you to ensure that you feel comfortable and safe.
As we all this, I'd also recommend ensuring that the psychology degrees are BPS accredited. This will save you money on the outset to ensure that you are able to become accredited on your course and don't have to undergo another year after your 3 years to become accredited.. This is quite important as some universities do not disclose this at face value.
I'd recommend doing some more research and maybe posting this onto your potential universities forum and get some information from those who study there about which lecturers have the most time to help you out if needed..!

Kind regards and good luck!

Hi,

Firstly I want to say congrats on your offer from us here at ARU, that’s amazing ! I’m Lily, a first year psychology student here at ARU and can gladly advise you.

I want to advise first on our support here at ARU because I feel that is one of the most important topics when going to University. At ARU we have support for our teaching as well as for our well-being which is so important to us. Lecturers, especially in first year, are always emphasising the need for support, going into the first year of university can be daunting. My lecturers in my course were super supportive, constantly offering help when I reached out, along with constant support with my tutor during our weekly tutor times. Also, well-being support for both students who have moved and students who live from home is widely offered here, even if it’s for someone to rant to about problems there is always someone for you.

Now onto the course of Psychology, which I personally have been really enjoying and can’t wait to get back to in September. If you look on the ARU Psychology page you will see a rough outline of the modules we offer. In first year, there is a wide variety you will cover from all aspects, with classes involving those who do Psychology alone, and courses with Psychology with clincial, criminology etc. This really opened my eyes to a wider variety of topics in Psychology and let me be more open minded in the topics I wish to explore further.

I don’t know if you applied to ARU at Cambridge, Peterborough or Chelmsford, but me myself I attend Cambridge. The city is so busy with students from both universities, it’s such a nice environment. With constant things to do with friends, it makes it easy to form those connections, especially at the start of the academic year. I want to put your mind at ease that if you attend the university in Cambridge, that it is a very student friendly city.

Again, I want to say congrats on your offer here at ARU and I hope this was super helpful. If there is anything else I can help with please let me know.

Hey @pr1ncesspeach_,
Congratulations on receiving your offers, great to see that you're considering Reading!
As both Coventry and ARU have addressed, the decision on which to attend has a lot of factors to take into consideration and shouldn't be taken lightly! I really like Courtney's suggestion of using the government stats in terms of safety and security and looking for a BPS accredited course as well as Lily's emphasis on support at University - all great points.

My advice to you would be to consider the 3 C's - campus, course, and closeness to home.

Here at Reading, our student study in a campus university setting, meaning it is separate from the main town (though connected by a 24/7 direct bus route), which affords us a lot of safety and security from the public. However, we are an open campus (so there's often lots of cute dogs walking round our lake!) so we have an onsite dedicated security team and building that students can access 24/7 in person or via phone if needed, though thankfully I've never had to. We also offer a free night bus to students studying late at night and live in our major student areas to ensure they can get home safely. Most of our accommodation is onsite too, though we have several slightly off-campus options if you would prefer, and you can find out all about them via our accommodation hub here. Crucially, I'd also encourage you to consider the wider area and opportunities the university you choose can offer you: anything from extra qualifications or skill building opportunities, placements, internships, part-time work, societies and social events. The focus on employability here is what really sold Reading to me! You can find out lots more about this via our Essentials page and checking out our Students' Union.

In terms of the course itself, our Psychology course is BPS accredited, providing our graduates with the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership, which is the starting point of a career as a psychologist in the UK. We have combined honours options - which means you'll get access to different modules and experts to people studying single honours - in Art, Philosophy, Neuroscience and Language Sciences, giving you more opportunities to specialise. We also offer courses with a Professional Placement Year, which can give you invaluable experience in a field of your interest. Our school of Psychology houses state-of-the-art facilities to support research and learning including eye-tracking and specialist equipment for electrophysiology and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). Additionally, we have various in-house NHS clinics, including our Anxiety and Depression and Speech and Language Therapy clinics, the Centre for Autism, as well as the world-renowned Charlie Waller Institute for evidence-based psychological treatments on site - you will have some access to these spaces for experiments or placements as an Undergraduate here. Our staff are all incredibly responsive and supportive of your study, and you'll receive a personal tutor to ensure you feel comfortable and able here at Reading, and a specialised supervisor for your Final Year Project too. If you'd like to find out more about any of this, visit our degrees in psychology or study Psychology with us pages!

If you have any questions about any of this or just studying at Reading in general, please don't hesitate to ask!
