Two children at University

Hi,
We have two children at University come September. Both at Lincoln one starting their first year and the other going into their second year aged 18 and 19 respectively.

We have a household income of £73k

The younger starting their first year has been awarded £5790 maintenance loan.

The older was awarded £4524 for 2022 academic year
£4651 for this coming year.

Just querying is it correct they are awarded different maintenance amounts?
Is the youngest studying nursing?

Hi there,

Maintenance Loan can be different for students depending on their course, where they're living and what year of the course they're in. If the students contact us, we can check their entitlements for them.

Thanks,
Claire

Hi there, the funding will depend on the year the students are going into (final year do receive slightly less), where they will be living and the type of course they are studying (if the course is outwith the 30 weeks and 3 days of a normal course). These can all play into how much a student receives and ones of these will be the reason why their entitlement is more than the other. We would need them to contact us via live chat in their account in order to check and confirm the reason for this. Thanks, Jason

It’s unlikely to be due to longer term dates then.

My guess then would be that somehow the dependent sibling was somehow missing from the older sibling household income information. That or some other deduction like pension contributions.

Did you “support” each child separately or submit the same pff2 form for both? The elder child sounds like they’re getting the basic loan amount without a household income assessment - if the household income information was only submitted recently for them then it takes 6-8 weeks for the household income assessment to be done so that might be what’s happening
