Laptop or iPad for a future engineering student?

I will be starting my study at the University of Loughborough for Aeronautical Engineering this year. I am stuck deciding whether to get a laptop for running 3D modelling software and other relevant programs or an iPad for note-taking during lectures (I prefer handwriting over typing). Are there any engineering students who could help me make this decision (perhaps any current students at Loughborough who know the course better than I do)?

If yes, are there any recommendations for a laptop or iPad I should look for?
