University of Kent or Essex ?

I am trying to decide whether to choose Essex or Kent uni, to study law as my firm choice. I want to specialise in corporate law and I want a uni with a good academic reputation, nice campus and lively surrounding area with decent night life, and good study abroad programme. I would also like a uni that has strong connections in the magic circle law firms. Also strong scholarship programmes! Any advice on which to pick ? Ive gotten offers from both.

Hey @Nobodyhere32!

At Essex we specialise in commercial law, public law, and human rights law. We are 3rd in the UK for research power in law (THE research power measure, REF2021) and 47th for Law in THE World University Rankings by Subject 2023. Our law course allows you to develop your intellectual and critical faculties, encourages you to think independently and teach you to present rational, coherent and accurate arguments orally and in writing. We have great facilities available on campus that you can complete work experience at, we have: the Essex Law Clinic where you can use your knowledge and skills to serve the community and help those most in need of legal services, and work on key human rights projects at our Human Rights Clinic. 🧐

With our study abroad programme with have relationships with over 150 institutions worldwide! Studying abroad allows you to experience other cultures and languages, to broaden your degree socially and academically, and to demonstrate to employers that you are mature, adaptable, and organised. If you spend a full year abroad you'll only pay 15% of your usual tuition fee to Essex for that year. You won't pay any tuition fees to your host university. 🛫🌍🗺🧭

Set within 200 acres of award-winning parkland - Wivenhoe Park and located two miles from the historic city centre of Colchester England's oldest recorded development. Overlooking the lakes at the heart of our Colchester Campus is the Albert Sloman Library. Use our paternoster lift to reach six floors of research resources, specialist materials, and of course a whole lot of books. It's the perfect environment for quiet reading or that last-minute essay. As Britain's oldest recorded development, the city of Colchester is steeped in over two thousand years of history after being founded by the Ancient Romans, and it's also where our main university campus is located. But it's not just Colchester that has lots for you to explore. Hey @Nobodyhere32!👋

I thought I'd give you some more information about our campus and the nightlife! To start, our campus is absolutely stunning - you'll be able to see lots of pictures/videos over on our Instagram account (@uniessex)📱. It's the perfect place to go for a nice walk or spend time with your friends, and there are even BBQs that students are able to use!

There are also many places to go to eat and drink on our campus! If you fancy a nice hot drink or snack, we have many different cafés on campus, including a Starbucks and a Costa. Or, if you're in need of a good meal, we have places like Buffalo Joe's, Zest, Roost and a range of other Essex Food outlets that serve a variety of healthy meals, as well as a good pizza or burger! 🍕If you want to loosen up and have some fun, we have an amazing SU Bar that does fabulous deals on drinks and has great music, and we have our very own nightclub called Sub Zero which hosts amazing nights out and themed events.🪩🕺

We also have many great study spaces, such as the library and the Essex Business School. The library is enormous, full of great resources and overlooks the lakes, making it the perfect study space. To add, the Essex Business School is a one-of-a-kind building, making it seem like you're studying in the middle of the rainforest! 🌳

There is also a gym on campus and the university provides a free silver membership to students living on campus in our student accommodation. However, if you aren't living on campus you can pay to use the gym from £13.99 a month, which is a great deal compared to other local gyms! 🏋️

The list goes on! There are so many amazing things that our campus has to offer! 📚

In terms of Colchester town, it is full of lovely restaurants, bars and shops, and there is a nightclub too! To add, you can get the train directly from Colchester Town Station into central London within an hour! 🚊 There is also Colchester Castle Park which has a rich history and is incredibly picturesque! 🌷🏰

I hope you find this useful!😊

I just did my first year of law. I got a DCC in A levels but the campus and staff was so good I got a first in my first year plus deans list. Deans list meant access to private events (In 2 weeks time I will attend an insight day at a silver circle law firm in London). So ig what im trying to say to you is that the level of support and the staff are incredible at essex. Lastly it's 40 mins away from central London via train so that's a plus.
