What is Kingston University's 'Residence Life Programme'?

Let's face it - as fun as decorating your room and introducing yourself to all your new flatmates can be, the first few weeks in university halls can sometimes feel a bit…lonely. It's not uncommon to feel homesick, especially if you're an international student, and you might feel like you haven't found 'your' people yet. The important thing to know, however, is that you're not alone - in fact, there's even people on your doorstep who want to support you through these feelings.

This is where the KU's Residence Life Programme comes in. Each hall of residence at Kingston University, whether that's Clayhill or Kingston Hill, has several Resident Life Ambassadors - or RLAs, for short - who are student staff hired to help other students feel included and develop a strong sense of belonging and community with those around them.

Throughout the year, RLAs will run events and activities for your hall of residence, which can range anywhere from gardening events, pizza nights, painting sessions, brunch meet-ups or even parties! There's usually a ton of events near the start of the year as Freshers' begin to settle in, so make sure to keep your eye out for those.

Regardless of what's on, RLA events are a great way to meet people outside of your course and flat, especially in the first couple weeks where you might be trying to find your footing with how the university works. They're an opportunity to expand your horizons, whether that's through trying something new or talking to students you've maybe seen around but haven't spoken to yet.

RLAs are also a good port of call if you have any concerns about your living environment, particularly in regard to your welfare, security or health and safety.

If you're interested in seeing what sort of events will be coming up as you move in, make sure to check out @reslifeku on Instagram, or email [email protected] for any questions or concerns.

Hope this was helpful - if you've any questions, just drop them down below and I'll get back to them as soon as possible.

- Eve (Kingston Rep).
