Socialising on my own?

I was wondering what was the best way to go about it? I'd like to go out for drinks and get to know people but since I am on my own and don't have friends in the area I was worried it would be a bit weird and dangerous as a young woman going out drinking on her own.. But there's a lack of society events for the ones I joined and I don't really know what to do in the mean time.
