Can I get into Cambridge if I don't have a rich daddy? (warning OLD THREAD)

Just wondering...

I just went to a normal inner-city comprehensive.

I went there on an Open Day, but felt so uncomfortable. Even though I've got 3 A level Grade 'A's, I'm not sure if I would be made to feel welcome there. I've got a friend there and he told me that the May Balls there cost £100 to £300 each - for one friggin' evening! They are so popular that they are sold on the black market.

Seems like a place where I wouldn't fit in.

Yes, if you have the right grades, interests and come across well in interview you may just do that.

there's no reason why you shouldn't be able to get in if you are academically capable + perform well in interview. But if you do feel that you wouldn't be comfortable there, then maybve it's not the place for you- you got to be happy + like the place where you study!

If you have 3 A level grade 'A's, I'm wondering why you post such a trolling thread. Surely you can distinguish whether you'll fit in there or not, and more importantly that class isn't the be all and end all. If Oxbridge like your brain, and you're armed with the grades and transferable skill such as communication, manners and logic. There's no reason why you don't have as good a chance as any other applicant. Now shoo miscrient!

Everyone fits into Cambridge. You will be people there like you, with the same worries.

Durham...home town perhaps?
sheesh

As for the comments, tickets cost between 45 quid for the events, 70 to 100 quid for full ball ticket, and then 170 quid for a ticket to magdelene (its by no means the best ball, but its the only white tie ball left, and all tickets are dining).
Trinity and Johns were about £100 last year (i went to johns and corpus).
As for the 1 fricking night comment, believe me, its an experience not to be missed. Its basically 80-100 quid to spend a night of decadence, all the booze and food you could wish for, plus casinos, foot rubs, bouncy castles, bungee run, sumo, tarot reading, crepes, vodka luges, big dance acts (Johns ball had the thrills, and mint royale - they were awesome)...
There really is no comparison.
AS for the money aspect, i live in a council house, and i just put a little away (i have a well paid night shelf stacking job in the summer) and that easily covered it. If you're a girl you need a dress as well (30-1200 pounds) and as for guys...well, every man needs a black dinner suit just in case anyway!

As for Magdalene, it is the most expensive, and probably not the best, but we're posh, so nah.

Why if you can't afford it, apply for an RAF, MARINE, NAVY or ARMY bursary. I applied for a sixth form scholarship with the best one-AIR FORCE- it would cover all costs- well most!

No, if your daddy isn't rich they won't let you in. You need a pony and a pashmina too.

Seriously though, if you think it isn't for you, don't apply. Most of the myths are true. Of course I encourage you to do some wider research, this is only my opinion.

Hmm...from your profile it doesn't sound like you are speaking from experience. I would have thought it would be the opposite actually!
