It's not worthless, but you're better off with a good portfolio of published work and a different degree - economics/politics/history etc.

No, not at all. But I was told that an English Degree was a better way into Journalism.

If it's NCTJ accredited then it's certainly not a waste, no. It'll give you the knowledge, skills and experience. Just be careful that it's actually accredited, you can see the NCTJ website for more details.

Personally I'd go for an undergrad degree in a traditional, essay-based arts subject (not just English but also history, philosophy, possibly law) or a degree in your area of interest (politics for current affairs - not that a politics degree's all that relevant, or a science degree for scientific journalism) and then, if you want, follow it up with a NCTJ accredited masters.
