Pharmacology by Rang, Dale, Ritter, Moor/Flower is good for getting to grips with pharmacology... funnily enough.
Pharmaceutics by Aulton is really good for the drug formulation stuff on the degree.
Other than those i would wait to see what your uni gives you as indicative reading. The BNF is also helpful, have a gander at the opening texts to each chapter.
Finally, yes you can get paid work in the holidays after 1st year. Alliance Boots (Just done through boots at the minute i think) do placement for all years but competition varies.
