I've been placed for this summer with camp america at a place in Rhode Island. I'm really looking forward to doing it...been so busy counting down the days that the A-level revision has sort of been forgotten.

Thanks for the heads up about the singing btw...so long as it's in groups I'll be able to handle it.

Which orientation day are you going to?
I'm considering doing something like camp america next summer. You guys say theres other companies that do this type of thing? Any web addresses where I can look up information? How early do you have apply for this type of trip? It would be between my first and second year at uni if i go next summer...

oh, and can you do it with a mate? me and my mate both wanna go, but we're both kinda shy when first meeting people. After the initial meeting people bit I'm sure I'd be fine, but I am a little shy...

I hope those help! I have applied through camp america, simply because the other two didnt accept students in their final year (i.e. someone who is not going to be a student when they return), but I think BUNAC offers more money, so I would have gone for them otherwise (though it certainly isnt something you do for the money!)

As for applying, I left it really late, as in about a month ago, so even though they accept people up until april, its going to limit my chances of getting a placment. I think you can start applying for next summer pretty soon after this summer, so maybe october / november time would be a good time to start looking? That would give you plenty of time to get all the forms in and have a good chance of getting a good placement.

I dont know about being placed with friends, I dont think camp america does it, but one of the other organisations might. I'm quite shy too, but have just figured that everyone else out there is going to be in the same boat, i.e. just meeting everyone for the first time, so that should make it easier to meet people.

Good luck with it!
cheers for the sites. I'm definately gonna look into doing something like camp america next summer. As for this one, its a) too late to apply (i think) and b) coz of my A level exams I can't actually leave in time. (i think most of them want you to leave by the 28th June... thats the day of my last exam..)

Belfast

 Not looking forward to the solos at camp. At least after the first time they hear me I'll not be asked to sing again...in fact I'll be lucky if they don't kick me out of the camp on the spot

Look at BUNAC rather than camp america. They charge less in total and you get paid better wages (although money isn't the most important thing).
I applied in October and got a placement by January.

No, the idea of singing solo in front of a bunch of kids does not appeal AT ALL!

Have fun at your orientation

Don't worry guys, it's all just there for the group bonding experience, after which chances are you won't be singing solo again.

BUNAC have been very good to me, my visa appointment is booked, the fee paid, my contract signed, and my outward flight date confirmed.

Good Luck to everyone on Summer Camp this year - where is everyone thinking of on their travels after camp finishes ?

For further chatting between people staff working on american summer camps I recommend the boards on this site.

Have fun.

Thanks for that website.

Where have you been placed for the summer? Depending on if / where I get placed, I'd like to travel around the east coast a bit, that areas always appealed to me. And if I have enough and money I'd also like to visit california maybe, as I've never been before. Just hoping I meet some nice people at camp who want to do the same sorts of things as me!

How about you? Made any plans yet?

Well I'm at Camp Echo Lake, NY, this summer, from June 09th - August 15th - a private residential camp, where the kids stay all summer.

I have intentions of travelling around afterwards; Boston, NYC, Seattle, Chicago, Niagara, Toronto, and possibly a quick trip into Vegas and San Francisco.

I've already ordered my Youth Hostel Association card from here in the UK, so I can use the US Hostels (you can't get membership in the US unless you're a US citizen), and I've also bought myself a Student Advantage card, so I can get my 15% off AMTRAK, amongst other discounts available elsewhere in the US.

As for money, remember whatever happens you must be able to produce at least $400 to immigration when you first present yourself at the border; whether that be in Travellers Cheques, or Cash - you must have it - having a £500 credit card is all well and good but that doesn't count in this instant.
Obviously then you've got $400 + your wages to come, which should be around $1200 total if you're councelling; or $1600 total if you're on maintainence/office staff (we get paid more!!).

I'm in Rhode Island, so I'm hoping to just spend time visiting some of the cities along the east coast, finishing off in New York for my flight home.

I never thought of trying to get a Youth Hostel/student advantage card....how much are they and what kind of discounts do you get? Also, do you have a web address where I can order them?

Do you mean $400 when you first land? Thanks for the heads up cause I was going to have most of my money on a debit card.

Just out of curosity...how much is everybody bringing with them? I know the CA handbook gives a guide to how much to allow for each week of travelling...but how much are you allowing for each week of camp?

Youth Hostel cards orderable from the Youth Hostel Association here in England & Wales, it costs just a £10, but obviously very useful if you don't fancy paying for a hotel just used for sleeping in.
The home page HI-USA (Hostelling International USA), where your membership is valid, along with any other Hostelling International locations, is to be found here.
They have hostels in some reasonable key locations.

The Student Advantage card, I see as a solid buy, as it's going to pay back it's £15 + £2 Airmail charge exceptionally quickly as most of my travel will be by AMTRAK where we get 15 % off with tickets purchased in advance, online.
There's also discounts available on Greyhound, and HostelWorld amongst others.
Home page of the Student Advantage card is here.

The $400 is for when you first land, and present yourself to the immigration official (Borders & Security or whatever they're called this week), who will want to check your J-1 visa, your DS-2019, ask you some questions on what you're doing there, and then he'll likely ask you "How are you going to support yourself?", at which time you MUST (immigration condition), produce $400 in cash or travellers cheques.

I have this $400 already, and I'll probably take another $400 so that my total budget for the summer is $2000.

Another tip, don't bring any money back - it's not worth it - you won't get anywhere near as much for your money back here in the UK ! American shopping is dirt cheap - blow it all in duty free if needs be.

As for the evenings, realistically, you're only going to get one day a week off at camp, so allow some for that, and then enough for your share of any pizza, fast food, and petrol for the runner abouters, in the evenings before curfue - I have the feeling you won't need alot really.

Thanks for all that info...I've looked on the website and it all looks good. It says for the student advantage card you can get cash for referring a friend...so I'll pm you my email address if you want I'll join through your referral...not much point turning your nose up at free money

QUOTE=Alexis3574]Is there anyone out there who has applied to go on camp america this summer? I am in the middle of applying, just waiting to hear back if I've got a place.
Would be good to hear from anyone going out there too, whats camps they are going on, and the sort of travelling they are planning on doing after camp, etc.

Hey Cat, you're going to be in the middle of the Adriondack Mountains as well - around 25 miles from the camp I'm going to be at.

Looking at their website: http://www.raquettelake.com/ it looks like there are two distinct units at the camp for each of the sexes. At least that'll mean that you'll get to mix with the staff from both.

From what I can tell it looks good - the kids are probably going to be from quite good backgrounds, as their parents have paid some $8250 for each kid.

Have a great time.

I'm going to be at Camp Echo Lake in Warrensburg, which isn't going to be too far away.

Are you with BUNAC ?

What are your plans for travelling after camp ?

Andy.

This is my first camp, so I'm not overly experienced, but anyway, mine sent me a DVD review of last year and by the end of it the first time I watched it (1 1/2 hours later) I was pretty much in tears because its such an incredible opportunity.

I'm with BUNAC this year and they've been superb - well organised, and their literature has been useful in guiding me through the entire process.

Our camp is muchly sports focused, but it's such a vast site that they have the room to seemingly specialise in everything.

I have target locations to try and hit after camp, needless to say New York is one of them, 3 hrs by AMTRAK from Sarasoga Springs, more frequent from Albany.

I fly June 9th from Heathrow or Gatwick - finish work on August 15th - flight back is currently scheduled for September 16th from JFK or Newark.
