Hiya! First of all I've just set up this blog http://geoporn.blogspot.co.uk/ and think you should all have a look and see if you like it! I plan to keep adding to it as regularly as possible. Secondly I'm a first year undergrad at Durham so ask me any questions you like about the course and yes I would like to join!
Hi! I wish I'd stumbled across this sooner, I'm a 3rd year geologist studying at Cambridge, and I'd love to join the society! I ended up studying geology almost by accident, I originally intended to study chemistry with maths, but I just fell in love with the subject in first year and have been an avid geologist/rock collector ever since. Any questions about the course/mapping projects are more than welcome and I'll do my best to answer them

Hi guys

Potential prospective geology student here! I've been out of full-time education since 2011. Before that I did an A-level in maths among other things, but maths doesn't come easily to me. I was wondering if anyone has any recommended reading to help with the maths content of geology courses?

Hello!

Firstly welcome to :tsr: Geology Society and secondly, i hope that those of you who share an interest in the subject make positive imput into the society!

Basically this society is for anyone who has an interest in geology, wether it be hobby or a subject that you have decided to study. I am a 2nd year, going into my 3rd year, geology student at the University of Southampton. I studied geology at AS/A2 with the WJEC board, which is when i decided that i wanted to study geology further, and hopefully, get a job in that field.

This society can be a place for budding geologists to discuss issues regarding geology in the media, a place for ideas and topics covered in courses to be discussed as well as posing to be an oppourtunity for questions to be asked, with the feedback coming from anyone who wishes to share their knowledge and enlighten the rest of us!

Geology is something that amazes and interests me so it would be great if like minded people wished to join this society and i promise that as founder i will do my very best to keep the society alive and interesting!

To show your support, either reply in this thread that you wish to join or send me a PM and declare your status as a member of :tsr: Geology Society in your signature, to show your pride!

So far, the exclusive members list comprimises of these fantastic people!

Look at the specialities of the universities and see which fit her interests best? Whether she'd be happy living in London for 4 years? What fieldtrips are available and which ones she'd prefer?

Thanks for the reply and she will check out those areas again. My daughter has looked at pros and cons and remains split. She feels guilty also about having the choice when for a lot of people Oxford is the dream. She's worried about making that choice and getting it wrong. As she says I want to go to the best I possibly can! I suppose she is searching for that one thing whereby she can turn round and say that's why I chose this uni. Hoping someone may be able to share their insight into the real differences between the two and not just what is written on the websites.

To be honest, each university has their pros, cons and specialities so it really depends on what kind of career your daughter has in mind. As an overall comment, the general opinion of my geology lecturers (@ Southampton) was it's best to go to Oxford as a postgrad rather than an undergrad for study of geology from a degree perspective but the 'Oxford experience' is quite unlike any other uni experience out there so depends if your daughter is looking for the best geology or the best 'package' (but then, either uni could be best for geology really...).

Unfortunately nobody could ever comment on the differences unless they decided to do two undergrad geology degrees! but I'm sure there'll be someone around who can help with one or the other.

One thing that strikes me as odd when I just had a brief look at the two unis' websites is that Oxford require A2 maths whereas this is not a requirement at Imperial or other universities. This adds weight to my general impression that Oxford is a much more theoretical university that Imperial is. Perhaps that could be a factor for your daughter? From the looks of it, Imperial are very strong on fieldwork (although where their claim of spending more time in the field comes from I don't know as they seem to be a few weeks behind Southampton from my count!).
Thanks hothedgehog. Yes, the requirement for A2 maths was an attraction for my daughter in applying to Oxford and she is also doing A2 further maths. Certainly I remember when she looked at various uni's it was the maths element that was a big factor in all of her choices. She hopes all going well in the future to do a PhD/ research. I don't think she thought she would ever be in this position of having both of the offers to choose from. As you say I doubt anyone will in reality be able to provide her with the answer. Thank you and any further info/ words of advice/ insight would be very welcome.
