Signarpore hired stealth Ninjas From Japan who would sneak into enenmy bases and kill soldiers in their sleep.
Well the fact that the Japanese rode in from Malaysia on bicycles is a start....and all the guns were facing the sea....DOH!
Partly was down to numbers.
Also the British were caught somewhat off guard. Either they weren't expecting the forces to get there or they weren't expecting the Japanese to at least reach that point that quickly.

A really good sort of relevant book to read is called "You'll die in Singapore."

It's an incredible story, well worth reading.

Not actually true, the Allies had 85,000, the Japanese 35,000 (that's what makes it so embarrassing!).

Indeed you seem to be right there. :yep:

Another answer for the OP:

From wikianswers:

The British had been overconfident that the Japanese would attack from the sea and thus pointed the naval defences towards the sea. They even described Singapore as an "impregnable fortress". Moreover, the weapons that the British had were far weaker than those of the Japanese. The Royal Air Force could offer the ships no protection as their planes had already been destroyed by the Japanese. Hence, the battleship "Prince of Wales" and the battle cruiser "Repulse" were sunk by fast Japanese torpedo bombers. When everything was going unaccording to the British troops' prediction, chaos was everywhere. The soldiers in SIngapore was unsure of where to go and what to do. Adding to their misery was the presence of a weak leader Lt. Gen Percival in the face of a strong Japanese command Lt Gen *********.
