Hullo all!

Just applying now, put down (from 1st to 5th): Westwood, Cryfield, Rootes, JM, Heronbank.
Hoping I don't get the last 2 as I'll barely afford them!

Anyway: Filling in the "Brief Description of Yourself" and was wondering if this was too detailed/waffley/hard to understand. Any help appreciated.
Fairly introverted, enjoy meeting friends/people in a pub over a drink, though not particularly into clubbing.
Not overly quiet, though not particularly loud either.
At school have enjoyed having a (fairly) wide range of friends in terms of subjects, would find it boring (I think) only living with one sort of person.
Casual video-gamer
Enjoy walking (a lot! though mostly walking on my own, to organise thoughts. I'm not sure how much I'd fit in with a hiking group, really), cycling, swimming, squash and badminton - though I'm not particularly into my fitness at all, just enjoy playing sport, every now and then.
Play guitar, not particularly well - just strumming chords. Mostly listen to indie rock, favourite artists being Travis, Radiohead, The Zutons, Snow Patrol, Stereophonics, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Feeder and Doves. (TMI probably...)
I do enjoy my music a lot, though I'm not in anyway a "hard rock" person, or something, if that makes sense... Used to play Bassoon, play Piano a bit, and love singing too.
Love Lord of the Rings/Tolkien, as well as Doctor Who, Star Wars, and other general Sci-Fi/Fantasy.
Reading-wise, enjoy Tolkien, Terry Pratchett, Jasper Fforde and Douglas Adams. Oh and the Calvin and Hobbes books!
Also play diabolo! (a bit)
I can cook, though not overly into cooking either!
In terms of "retiring" - probably between 11pm and 2am, I guess it would depend on lectures etc.
Avid reader of webcomics XKCD and SMBC.

In summary:
Fairly introverted, but chatty, person who likes games, music, and lone walks, seeking a mix of introverted/extroverted people studying a variety of subjects, with similar (but not-too-similar) interests and a polite and friendly manner!
My MBTI (currently) is INFP!

Also, one other question: For westwood, some of the reviews have said that they've had trouble with kitchen space but that "they think something is being done about that next year" - does anyone know if anything has been done?

Finally: Thanks again ttoby for your reply last week, I've just realised I never replied! Sorry! :s-smilie:

Edit: To ask a second question: would rootes be recommended for someone who doesn't like clubbing at all/being kept up? I know there will be quieter kitchens, but with everything being close together will that really reduce the noise? Really like westwood, but the kitchens at rootes look nicer, plus I hadn't realised there wasn't much difference in terms of room size between the two. Will you get a similar corridor/community feel in westwood with people wandering between kitchens/corridors/popping in?

You have put in a lot of information about your interests in the personal statement - I'd say personality is a lot more important when they arrange the rooms, as well as practical things like the time you go to bed. Although, interests might still be used as I remember I was put next to several people who had similar interests to me.

So maybe remove some of the information about interests to just the bare bones, so that the personality stuff is more prominent. This isn't a major thing; it might just help with the readability for whoever goes through your application.

Westwood was renovated a few years ago, and I've heard rumours they might be doing further renovations. This was after I lived there so I can't comment much - I think they might have rearranged the fridges in the kitchens to get a bit of extra space in some places.

I'm not sure how well the sound travels around Rootes.

In Westwood, what typically happened was that people would wander between the kitchen/rooms but mostly within their own floor. Some people would regularly go up to a different floor and socialise with people there e.g. if they got on with those people better. Most people wouldn't visit other floors as often, but they would see them from time to time. It depends on the person as to how many people you might want to get to know.

Applied. Finally.

I think I'm quite likely to get Westwood, aren't I? With it first? Hope so - Looking forward to it!!! (depending on STEP...)

Choosing accommodation is driving me crazy right now.

Does anyone have any idea of what Sherbourne is like?

Also, I'm a little worried about living in a flat. Can any Warwick people tell me their experiences of it?
Original post by Bencant
Oo, I was under the impression that was all provided... so what, every single person sharing a flat brings their own pots and pans? Doesn't that take up a lot of space and also cost a lot to buy?

Here's a complete list of the cooking (not including eating) implements I'd bring with me if I was buying everything:

One frying pan, large, decent quality, of the high-sided variety - it can double as a wok, it'll last forever, and it's big enough to do several days worth of meals at once; if you can get one with a lid, so much the better
One nest of billies, at least 3 pans - you can fit several in the same space as one saucepan, they don't have awkward handles sticking out, they can double as casserole dishes, and if you end up doing something fancy that needs lots of pans, you've got them
One cake tin, large, springform - I like cake
One baking tray, large
One billy handle - for picking up billies without burning self
One pair oven gloves - for picking up other things without burning self
Many plastic food storage boxes - for storing the aforementioned several days worth of food
One pyrex oven dish, with lid - seriously, my one of these has done so many different things, it's ridiculous, it can be a cake tin, a casserole dish, a storage container, a lasagne pot, etc, etc...
One wooden spoon
One slotted spoon
One fish slice - plastic, to avoid damaging frying pan
One tin opener
Two sharp knives - one serrated, one otherwise
Cookbook - for when I forget how to cook over the summer

And that's about it. With the exception of the stuff that'll go in the draw and the plastic boxes, you can comfortably fit all of that one one of your five cupboard shelves, leaving plenty of spaces for other stuff.

Quite nice, a bit out of the way. I've only spent a little time there, and it's liable to be a bit varied at the moment, being as it hasn't been around for long enough to have stereotypes build up around it.

Can you be more specific about your worries?

Thank you! I don't mind being a little further away - the walk in the morning is likely to be the only exercise I do in my first year!

Well, obviously I would be spending a significant amount of time with my flatmates, but I was wondering if there is much interaction between different flats. Each flat is only accessible by keycard, and there isn't a common room. Do you think that will be a problem?

That is a down side of living in flats instead of corridors. However, I haven't lived in flats like this myself so I couldn't say how easy it is in terms of getting people to let you in to places. The upside of this is that it is harder for food in the kitchen to be stolen.

Typically, if you're in an area with no common room then you would use the kitchen instead where there would be a table with chairs round it to sit at.

To help you interpret the map, I would estimate that you could walk from Lakeside to the maths building in about 12-15 minutes. Many people do prefer to choose ensuite, however having shared bathrooms is still a perfectly good option since they are cleaned very frequently (about once per day). You can put on your personal description that you prefer a quiet room, and they will put you with similar people within your halls.

Thank you very much!

I think we would get along pretty well! I'm also into casual gaming and the same kind of music (Feeder, RHCP and Radiohead particularly) as well as solo walking and Doctor Who, Star Wars, Hitchhiker's Guide, etc...

I put Westwood first too, so maybe see you there
Which one would be quieter? Cryifelds or Westwood?

Both places will have both noisy areas and quieter areas. The area you get put into will depend on your personal description so if you want somewhere quieter then make sure you say this.

Only thing about the cryfields I have heard is that the room is really small, would it be big enough for my desktop PC? It has like 2 monitors, 5.1 speakers and such.

None of the rooms are particularly massive :curious: . You should be able to get two monitors onto the desk in cryfields if you don't fancy doing much work, but leave the 5.1 speakers at home unless you want 300 people peeved at you  . The walls aren't very thick at all

Awesome!
I ended up cutting down my description a fair - hadn't realised there was a character limit
By the sounds of things from previous years - it seems like it receives a moderately low number of applications, for the number of rooms it has - So we should get it - if the trend continues
Hope to see you there :teeth:

Film studies/literature though, I don't know... :ninja:

Spoiler

anyone any ideas on what this is getting at?

Do you prefer a single-sex area? *Yes No
Will you accept a mixed/single sex area
if your preference is not available? *

I don't get what it means with the mixed/single sex area? My preference is to not have a single sex area yet it seems to be suggesting them both, really confused?

Also for this question: Do you prefer to be allocated with other students who want to live in a quieter area? *

Will I automatically be put in a quiet area if I choose it? I want it to be quiet but I want there to be a fair bit of partying and stuff.

If you don't want single-sex (so you want a flat with both boys and girls), put no for both.

If you indicate you wish to be in a quiet area, you will be put with people who also ticked they would like to be in a quiet area. It's the first stage of splitting people up. After this initial split, the actual people you'll then get assigned to will depend on what you put in your statement and who's left in the pool.

Yeah, that really isn't a problem. Last year, our kitchen and the one next to it were full about 22 hours in your average day of people from everywhere, just dropping in to chat, eating with people, or even in one case baking us a cake. Unless you lock yourself in your room all day and only eat at 2am, a lack of people to talk to isn't going to be a problem.

If you put "yes" on the first one, you're pretty likely to be in a single sex area, if "no" it's pretty likely to be a mixed area. If you put "no" on the second, you can replace "pretty likely" with "basically certain".

There are no areas at all where there wont be "a fair bit of partying and stuff".

Yeah, I don't think there's much of a change that we won't get it. Of course now that I've said that...
But I don't know, I'd rather write about Fight Club in an exam than solve an equation  Then again, I'm impressed with anyone who can continue maths into A Level, let alone uni!

I couldn't say for certain but I would expect that they would initially allocate some single-sex areas based on the people that want them (these areas are typically in the minority) then to make up the numbers to fill them they would put in some people who said they don't mind about not getting their preference.
