I know nobody else who is coming to York

Hi, I'm hoping to study at York from September but I have no other friends who are also coming to York (I did but some didn't get offers and some changed their minds).

I know that this is a normal situation but I'm quite shy/socially awkward. Is anyone else in a similar position?

Don't worry if your in student accommodation you're sure to make friends. You'll also make friends with people on your course and societies you wish to join. I know this is what everyone says butttt there will be lots of people in the same situation as you.

I'm coming to York as a postgrad student and I'm in exactly the same situation. I would say though, don't worry about making loads of friends in the first couple of weeks. Everyone's in the same boat and trying to find their feet, and while some of my friends became best friends with their flatmates, not everyone will. Go with the flow, and you'll find people. My best friends at uni weren't even at uni. I met them through campaigning and protests and I couldn't imagine life without them

Hiya,

Don't worry - nearly of your housemates and coursemates will be in the same position as you. It's not particularly common for students to have friends from home at university

That said, moving to a new city where you don't know anybody is certainly a daunting prospect. Try and remember that everyone is in the same boat, and even the most confident-seeming people are probably also nervous inside.

There are a range of activities during Fresher's Week to help you break the ice and meet new people. However, you'll continue to make friends all throughout the term and the year, so don't worry if the people you meet in your first week aren't particularly your type of people! Just try and keep an open mind. Joining societies is often a really good way to meet like-minded people with similar interests to you.

Once you know if you're coming, you'll find out what college you're in. They usually have Facebook groups set up for each accommodation block, so you can find the people who you're going to live with. This is often really helpful as you see some friendly faces when you arrive! There are also plenty of support systems available if you feel like you're struggling.

Good luck with everything, and hope to see you at York in September!

Katie

p.s. I started here 4 years ago with similar worries to you, and I quickly found friends who I know I'll be in contact with for many years

Thank you everyone! Hopefully I'll be ok
Knowing nobody is actually a blessing. If you did then you would probably be comfortable with your group of friends and not make as much of an effort with others. Keep in contact with your old friends, but see it as an opportunity to broaden your social group

That's also true. I'll do my best.

The one person I knew going to my uni I was introduced to through my driving instructor, and they stopped responding to my texts after the second text. I thought i was terrible but that must be a record. 🤕☻😂😂😂 i hope that you find one, but it wont be too bad if you don't, just start with your flatmates and work from there.

Hi,
I was just wondering if I could get some advice. I am going to be staying on campus at York at the Medical School but I am a mature undergraduate student (20) and I have been given options for any preferences I may have. I am trying to decide whether to go for living with postgraduates, upper year undergraduates (I think 2nd year+) or other mature first year undergraduates. I would really like to get to know people and I want to be able to make friends with people in the same boat as me but I also think it would be good to get advice from upper year students. However I don't want to be isolated with just a specific group of people. Can you please help me decide?
Also, I have chosen my accommodation (first Halifax) but I have been hearing that its not that great. I really want to meet lots of different people and socialise a bit. Can you also suggest another college for me to join?
Thanks
