Not drinking - Freshers?

Hi Guys Need a bit of advice

So basically i dont really drink simply because i dont want to and see no real benefit to it myself however im perfectly fine about others drinking infront of me and being drunk it does not really bother me

However is it seen as weird by your flat mates or anyone else you meet in freshers if you dont drink? Can i still make friends?

Im still going to go to events as i enjoy going out i just wont be smashed...
I knew quite a few people last year who didn't drink and they still came out clubbing etc with everyone else. You don't need to drink to have fun in these places.
No one really judges you for not drinking, the most you might get is someone being curious and asking why, but that's about it, and if someone does decide to be a dick about it then that reflects more badly on them than you

I think people will be more curious than anything else. You may get the odd person trying to talk you into drinking but most people should be respectful.

Hello ,

I've just answered this in another thread and as I said to them, let me say to you; the foundations of friendships are not built on clubbing, drinking and partying and a persons respective choice to choice whether they do or don't. Nobody is that shallow at university and if you do find one person that is, they aren't worth your time.

No where or no body has said that you have to drink to make friends. Do what makes you comfortable and people will respect that. You can still attend Freshers Events and be social without drinking - yes, you can still make friends.

They are plenty of social events on during Freshers and the year where you can make friends (and not need alcohol).

You'll be fine,
Good luck

People don't care if you don't drink; they care if you don't socialise  so long as you are firm and confident, and you're still enjoying the nights, you'll be fine!
you need to go out clubbing and stuff (at least at first) and look like you're enjoying yourself as well so you can fit in properly but if you do that no one will really care if you're actually drinking, people are only bothered if you're sat there looking bored

I knew people who didn't drink for various reasons and it was never an issue
I'm surprised about this every year - all the anxiety and the idea that Fresher's Week is like some kind of alcoholic police state.

If you don't drink - don't drink. No one will care. The only thing that makes you unusual or weird is the fact that you're concerned about it.

What I would say is that there are so many people who go into university who say they don't drink because they think it's big and clever not to - of course they don't drink - because we're usually 18 and by and large won't have had a lot of exposure.

Not saying this applies to OP - but I find that for a lot of people, it's just attention-seeking or trying to big themselves up in the alternate. A bit of a hipster "I don't drink cos I'm cool" type thing. There's no need to go completely mad - but I would 100% say give it a go.

The number of people on TSR generally who whine about not being able to make friends because they're inhibited or shy or have social anxieties. Your answer is in those solo cups.

I dont think im better than people who drink at all and im more than open to going out because i know i can have just as good of a time im not one of those creeps who will go and sit in a dark corner for 4 hours, the only issue is when people will be persistent and keep asking to have one that ****ing irritates me.

Ok, I get that. Do you have experience of this happening to you - from VI form?

This is something that in my experience is unlikely to happen amongst people who don't know one another - you tend to get friends pressurising people that they know are drinkers to have some.

I have been at both Kings and UC, and unequivocally, Freshers Week is nothing like the image some people get of a hazing type event. In reality, the only thing that separates Freshers Week from any other is that there are usually no lectures and a few administrative procedures to go through - hence there is an "excuse" (so to speak) for going out late. This is combined with the excitement of throwing together a lot of new and enthusiastic people.

It depends very much on your university, but every Freshers Week I have seen starts off with a lot of meeting people, enrolment, sometimes a tour and IT/library inductions. Then the union and/or department might put something on. After that, what happens is simply a function of having free time on ones hands.People naturally want to go out together - although some stay in. The union and some of the socs will put on dos, often at a big venue in town. Whether you go to these or not is up to you - and almost certainly no-one will know or care whether you go to them or not.

One feature in London (and probably elsewhere) is a lot of pirate Freshers events held by private promoters that sell tickets and claim to be official Freshers events. All the same, if you want to go to them - it's up to you.

Some people spend all of Freshers Week playing computer games with their new friends. Some get together and go to late night coffee bars to chat.

The idea that there is some kind of highly pressurised initiation type event or even gatherings where people are made to feel compelled to consume alcohol is a myth - the only way that will happen is if you choose it, and are essentially part of it.
I don't drink either (I simply haven't found anything I like the taste of yet!) but nobody at uni forced me to. We went to pubs, played drinking games in the flat (ring of fire is especially fun when you don't have to drink the dirty pint  ) and just had a laugh. In my experience nobody cares if you don't drink as long as you're friendly and don't make a big deal about it.

Everybody is going to be in the same boat. Some people will probably judge you for not drinking, they'll be knobs, and others will just accept it and continue to talk about other things with you. The only major issues would be sitting out of drinking games, you could still play games like beer-pong or flip-cup but others would be more difficult.

What an awful thing to say.
