Breaking news: ISIS town of Dabiq falls to Turkish troops

The ISIS-held town of Dabiq has fallen to Turkish troops after an extremely short battle.

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/middle-east/isis-dabiq-loses-apocalyptic-prophesy-town-of-dabiq-to-syria-rebels-short-battle-a7363931.html

ISIS has long held Dabiq at the very heart of their ideology; in ISIS eschatology, it was their belief that Dabiq would be the site of a final apocalyptic battle between "Rome" and the Muslims. ISIS named their news magazine, Dabiq, after the town. It has held an exceptionally important place in their religious worldview as apocalyptic / end-times prophecy is very important to ISIS.

It is interesting how easily it fell. ISIS has been completely hollowed out and are likely no longer capable of mounting a sustained defence of a position except for Raqqa and Mosul. What is also interesting is that ISIS prophesied that the final battle would be between ISIS/Muslims and "Rome"; Turkey is essentially the successor of the Byzantine Empire. In fact, before the Ottoman Empire the Turkish kingdom was called the Sultanate of Rum (Rum being a cognate of Rome).

Will the fall of Dabiq have a profound undermining effect on ISIS' credibility amongst the crazies and the Islamists? Only time will tell.

In other ISIS news, the Iraqi Army and Pesh forces have gathered together 60,000 troops in preparation for the final assault on Mosul, ISIS' final stronghold in Iraq. The main offensive will likely start in the next 12 hours; there are reports that anti-ISIS groups in Mosul are starting to rise up, killing ISIS forces and emirs and Pesh and ISF forces have already started clearing operations in the Mosul suburbs.

In fact, US and French artillery commenced a sustained bombardment around 15 hours ago to soften up ISIS forces; this is in addition to months of airstrikes softening up ISIS forces. Reuters reported the other day that ISIS managed to prevent a rebellion planned b one of its senior commanders in Mosul who had planned to rise up to stab ISIS in the back and allow Iraqi troops to retake the city with minimum bloodshed; ISIS managed to detect the rebellion and execute the ringleaders. The fact that their own commanders are now planning rebellions tells us how badly ISIS is faring and the degree to which they are falling apart as a coherent organisation

Picture taken yesterday of a convoy of fighters from the Kurdish Socialist Party heading towards the Mosul front; the column is being led by the KSP's General-Secretary Kaka Hama. PIty these brave socialists can't count on any solidarity from the likes of Corbyn, Seumas Milne and the Stop the War Coalition.

Photos taken yesterday of the Peshmerga 16th Brigade heading toward the Mosul front

Pictures of the Iraqi Army preparing refugee and overflow camps for civilians who flee Mosul City

And a picture of a propaganda / psychological operations news sheet that has been dropped by the Iraqi Air Force informing the citizens of Mosul that their liberation is nigh and telling them who the commanders of the operation are.

go Kurds go Peshmerga !!! crush the Daesh cockroaches ...shatter the Sons of Belial.
Picture taken yesterday of an Iraqi Army TOS-1 tracked rocket launcher being driven up to the front by trailer (that's how the logistics of these things work; you put tanks and tracked vehicles onto these trailers and drive them up to the edge of the battle zone)

And another picture taken yesterday of a Pesh convoy preparing to take part in the Hawija offensive that will occur simultaneous to the Mosul offensive

Who is Belial? Otherwise, I completely agree with the sentiment; the time for the final battle against ISIS in Iraq has come. This reckoning has been a long time coming.

A Biblical demonic figure. The phrase 'sons of Belial' is used in the Torah to refer to worthless or evil people.

Interesting. Is it a cognate of Ba'al or Beelzebub?
Wasn't it more of a withdrawal by ISIS after the Turks bombed the **** out of them? Anyway a pushback in the right direction.

In some classifications (such as Barrett's), Belial and Beelzebub are both princes of Hell.
Here's a sweet video on Twitter of the final Dabiq battle. At 1:10 you can see an A-10 Warthog engaging ISIS forces, and doing its awesome brrrrrrrppppp thing (when it fires its 30mm cannon**)

**These are the 30mm cannon shells on the A-10. The shell is made from depleted uranium, a very dense metal that is tremendously lethal. Here's a picture of a crewman holding one of these shells, standing in front of the 30mm gatling gun on the A-10. There's a second picture of the A-10 Warthog; I love how it has an angry, fanged beast-face painted on the front

Indeed. It is said that ISIS pulled out around 2,000 fighters to Al-Bab just up the road, but it goes to show just how dire their situation is where they feel unable to stand up to a Turkish assault even on a town with such ideological importance as Dabiq

Not sure i would read too much into it, except its a sign going in the right direction. They might wnat to preserve those 2000 for fights elsewhere. I still think the conflict has many years to run.

Daesh's skill set does not go much beyond torturing prisoners and sexually abusing women and children. they will be turned into compost by the US air force. *

The A-10 Thunderbolt II really is an excellent bit of kit. Along with the AH-64 Apaches & a variety of UAVs, it certainly provides an excellent Close Air Support asset to the American forces & those of its allies, including us. It's ridiculous that the USAF wants the F-35 to replace it; the F-35 is too expensive & too fragile as a CAS asset in conflicts like the fight against Da'esh.

It's good to see Da'esh is in full retreat. It's only a matter of time until Mosul falls although I do think it'll be a bloody fight.

That's it man. Corbyn be like

In before Mosul gets liberated, saving the lives of hundreds of thousands of people and Corbyn and his cronies and his idiot supporters denounce it because 3 civilians died in the process. You might think I'm being facetious but this is precisely their view on the RAF air strikes.

Didn't they want to replace the A-10 a whila back but decided to keep it? What it does is pretty unique and there isn't really an aircraft in the US military that can match what it does. And I hear that a lot of pilots and soldiers on the ground like it as well.

Ramadi and Fallujah took quite a bit of urban fighting before being fully cleared. Mosul is bigger so it will almost certainly take longer.

The USAF keeps trying to phase out the A-10 as it isn't as sexy as its other fast jets & it doesn't really want it on the budget (despite the fact that it's pretty cheap to operate in comparison to other attack jets). I think its future is currently secure until 2022; at one point it looked as though the USAF wanted to retire it as early as this year but Congress, with the support of the US Army, rejected that idea.
All accounts I've heard from ground troops are generally positive about the "Warthog", friendly fire incidents notwithstanding.

I do think that the A-10 would struggle to survive in the face of modern Russian air defence systems so its effectiveness in Western Europe may now be limited. However, for COIN & similar operations like those against the Taliban, Da'esh etc, it's in its element. The truth is that no other aircraft I know of can take battle damage like the A-10 can & the cost effectiveness (as well as intimidation effect) provided by the GAU-8 Avenger cannon is unmatched.
