Japanese horror 'Grotesque' banned from sale in UK

Distributors of Japanese movie Grotesque had hoped to be given an 18 certificate for the film, which involves torture such as amputation and eye-gouging.

But the British Board of Film Classification said the film featured sexual sadism for its own sake. It said that giving the film a rating would involve a ''risk of harm'' to those viewing it.

Selling or supplying the film would now be illegal.

The BBFC rejects films only rarely, preferring to give advice about how appropriate cuts would achieve the preferred certificate.

The decision was taken by BBFC director, David Cooke and senior colleagues.

The board said the majority of the film focused on the assault, humiliation and torture of two victims. The main character takes them prisoner abducts, restrains, strips and sexually assaults them before inflicting horrific injuries until they die.

Mr Cooke said: ''Unlike other recent 'torture'-themed horror works, such as the Saw and Hostel series, Grotesque features minimal narrative or character development and presents the audience with little more than an unrelenting and escalating scenario of humiliation, brutality and sadism. The chief pleasure on offer seems to be in the spectacle of sadism (including sexual sadism) for its own sake.

''Rejecting a work outright is a serious matter and the board considered whether the issue could be dealt with through cuts. However, given the unacceptable content featured throughout cutting the work is not a viable option in this case and the work is therefore refused a classification.''

The BBFC rates around 10,000 films for DVD release each year.

The last film which the BBFC rejected for an 18 certificate was the 2004 movie Murder Set Pieces, which was turned down in 2008.

Until that, it had not refused an 18 rating since 2005 when the film Terrorists, Killers And Other Wackos - made up of real clips of execution and torture - was turned down.

Does the BBFC actually have any power with regards to this in the technology age. So what selling and distributing it is illegal, however this negates the fact that many people are simply going to watch it online hosted on servers overseas. Surely the BBFC is just giving notoriety to the film and basically urging people to watch it?

What's to actually stop the distributor simply hosting it overseas on a server and charging peoples credit cards to watch it, they could even allow people to purchase it and download it as an ISO file and burn their own copy to DVD. I've seen multiple copies of it up on rapidshare, megaupload, hotfile, and torrent networks for free as well :/

Ichi the Killer is basically one big gore fest of torture, rape, masochism and what not yet that did not get banned :s-smilie:

What are peoples opinions?

I agree, this has made me WANT to watch it now. Whereas, if it had just been released I probably wouldn't really care.

I want to know what makes it THAT bad.
I've seen worse real videos than anything that film could have, so it won't be that bad I reckon.

I noticed this story last night but waited until today to post it here purely because I wanted to see if my suspicions were true. Since it was announced the the BBFC was banning the film the number number of people torrenting this video has almost doubled over night. And other film forums have gone berserk with chatter, everyone wanting to know why it's so bad. So effectively the notoriety is free advertising for the producer and now its going to get more potential watchers :s-smilie:
Anything you try to ban will cause a Streisand effect.

Unless you can actually control that so that people are deterred from seeing it, there is no point in banning it.

Sorry, but why would you want to watch a film which is basically all torture??
They said it doesn't even have much of a storyline so why the hell would you want to sit there and watch it?!

**** you. Its not about that. I have zero intention of seeing this film, but I'm not so apathetic about its censorship. The bbfc ban media that they don't think is 'suitable' for grown adults to wrong, which is ********. People have odd quirks, and the we certainly shouldn't question them. If some guy wants to watch a movie about torture (no one really tortured), we should certainly let him!

The fact that it was approved in many other countries including Germany and Japan makes me interested as to what is so wrong with the film that grown British adults cannot be trusted with watching it. It's more a issue of censorship more than anything, everyone wants to know why something is censored or banned so they go out and watch it.

In banning the film the Streisand effect as posted by TheTallOne comes into play. This film would have gone unnoticed if they'd allowed it to pass, however in banning it they have given it notoriety and perked the public's interest.

heh. Iirc, there was a big furore over the book by Kirino which was heavily censored when it was translated into English. The story itself was actually based more off a crime story/psychological drama about the murky underworld of underage prostitution, social violence and the allusion of the narrator which gets drawn into.

What happened is that the story was then loosely picked up by Koji Shiraishi and made into a horror movie, but sadly got absolutely bastardised into a Saw-type movie with Japanese pornstars with none of the style that Kirino attempted to get across in the novel.

Shame really. It could have been a really good movie but instead played off the novel's name and wanted to be another SAW/Hostel movie.

Well certain movies receive bans in Japan and Germany too and are often cut. What is acceptable in one culture is not always acceptable in another. Its more a matter of protecting cultural sensibilities than anything else. The movie is banned in the UK because of its sexual violence and lack of morality.

Personally I would just ban it because as a movie its a steaming piece of ****.
Nanny state gone mad. Can't wait to leave.

Unless you're talking about the Russian Hammer video, which I've never seen, I don't think there's any real videos worse than the descriptions of scenes in Grotesque.

Care to enlighten me?

lol
Just to be picky. The BBFC don't actually ban anything. They refuse to give something a rating. Separate UK law says media without a rating cannot be sold. There's no reason why the government (current or future) can't change that law.

Yes, 3 men 1 hammer. Also Hatchet vs. Genitals. And many other torture/death videos.

Even if he goes and tortures someone thereafter?
