I'm not taking a tv as I really can't afford the licence, even though it would be a shame cause I'd have loved to take my PS2 :frown: . I haven't been there in previous years so I don't know how essential this stuff is

btw, is it true that even if you only use your tv for games consoles you still have to pay a tv licence? I think that rule kinda sucks if its true :frown:

I am taking a laptop though, everyone says it's essential, so thats one thing I won't forget
Laptop is mandatory hehe
Yeah the licence thing is true its a really poo rule that if u have tv u need a licence even if u dont use it. They want hung by the scrots for that one....

i read ur not allowed no other digital boxes like freeview and that if u do take a tv, but what if u get a tv card which has the freeview channels on, that should b ok dnt u fink?
Dont see why not. Not too clued up on TV cards tho all i know is that if u use one in a laptop then u dont need a licence unless u plug it into the wall cos it act as a portable telly then. But we wouldn't do that would we.....................

You DO need a TV license if you have a tv card, its exactly the same as a TV but on your PC.

No, you need an aerial and thats it, it doesn't come through the internet.

I have a feeling that freeview comes through a normal TV aerial(on the roof) so if you did have one then you wouldn't beable to get it anyway. But you can get digital smal aerials. I dont think there would be much wrong with it.

SO we can take freeview? I hav a freeview recorder which i bought instead of a vcr so i was plannin on takin that
You say we do need a licence, however I heard that battery powered tvs do not need a licence, and surely if you put a tv card in a laptop it is battery operated?

*clinches at straws* :P

Right i promise you that if you have a tv card in you alptop you DONT need a tv licence so long as you dont plug it into the wall. I knwo this because they tv licence peolpe told me when i rang them up and asked them. Its perfectly legal so long as you dont plug it into the wall. End of:smile:

this is what it says on the tv licensing site:

If you use a TV or any other device to receive or record TV programmes (for example, a VCR, set-top box, DVD recorder or PC with a broadcast card) - you need a TV Licence. You are required by law to have one.

so you need one. but...it also says

Aren't I covered by my parents' licence while I'm away?
No. Unless your TV is powered by internal batteries, such as a pocket-sized TV. If you think that this is the case, please call us on 0870 241 5973 to check that you are eligible for cover on your parents' licence.

so in some ways your right. You could use it anywhere, except when its plugged in.

You would have to ask. But i can't see why freeview would be banned, its free and nothing is really stopping you.

Can I just say...those of you who are worrying about TV licenses and stuff are obviously doing what most of us did just before we came to Uni, realising that its a crap rule and we can't afford the license.
So my two cents are... take a tv if you really want one. I didn't take a tv at first for all the reasons above, but when I got there I found that crap loads of people had one and didn't have a license, so I thought why should I be the only one bothered about the rules?! So I bought a TV and nobody ever got found out.
I like to look at it this way, we're all good law abiding citizens but the government clearly want to skank students even more than they do. So don't give them the pleasure of nabbing a hundred odd quid off you. If they do find you, they warn you first, then they give you £100 fine (less than a license anyway).

Just give it some thought!!

freeview is allowed. My friend had it last year and had no probs. You should find that most halls have tv room with freeview, dvd etc, and you socialise more if you don't have a tv....but I had one last year and would recommend taking one...what else is the morning for if not for watching phil and fern?! Also, you can get back some of the money for the tv license, as you won't be using it from june onwards, you can get back about 3 months worth of the money, I did this year, thats just a little tip from me

Okay here's the deal...

Tv can be used for playstations and game consoles....and if an aerial is not present and not connected then you are able to use the tv.

However if you wish to receive channels through an aerial...
You CAN buy a tv license....but i'd say 70% of people don't. The likelihood of you getting caught is ver very very slim as for a visitor to enter your block e.g tv license man, u must be given 48 hrs notice. By which time you can hide ure tv/aerial.

I watched bugger all tv when i took mine up, i watched all videos, dvds, new episodes of OC, Lost One tree hill on my comp. Plus ure common room should have a sky enabled tv.

I'm not encouraging you to risk it by the way, i am merely stating how you could get away with it....

Basically steely covered it, to play ps2 u dont need a arial.

Also you can use a console though a TV card on your pc.
- And you can get a pci tv card for less than £30, and fit it to any desktop pc in under 10mins.

Alternatively there are also USB (exturnal) and PCIMA (laptop expantion slot) versions avalable.

Im not taking a TV, or games console, or buying a licence, but my PC will have a tv card, which i *might* use.
- But im really not a big TV person, so i doubt i will use it more than 2/3 times ever.
