Level 3 Zoology at Glasgow Uni

Hey everyone!!

So I'll be starting level 3 Zoology in September and just wondered if any past students had any information/tips they would like to pass on about the course.

In particular I'd love to know more about the field trips to Loch Lomond and Millport.

Many thanks

Hey, I graduated with a degree in Zoology last year and i will be completely honest....3rd year is the hardest.
The field trips can be miserable and they are very hard. You will be in labs till 11 at night in millport and rowardennan is more fun but stow away some food because you will be starving in the clean air and with the amount you work.
Millport in particular was difficult the year i went as you were writing a lot of detailed reports till late and a lot of my classmates prefered to make lots of noise and never let me sleep.

Now other than that...3rd year is were you get to go into more detail and that means it is more interesting. I have most of my memories from third year... my tips include be prepared for a hard working year and try and focus...but take photos because this is the year you will remember forever

Hey!! Thank you so much for your reply, I really appreciate it  Like you said you just need to accept there will be some good things and some not so good things.

I will just need to get my head around living in the library for the next year and hopefully i'll get through it!! Can you remember how your timetable was spread out in 3rd year? Like how full your days/week was?

Also, how are you doing now with a degree in Zoology. Did it get you to where you wanted to be?

Hey...
Nope i hate to be the bearer of bad news but there is very little work in the way of zoology. There are graduate schemes that will take any first or 2:1 degree...and some broad biology work, but if you are intent on a zoology job then 1) get lots of volunteering work in while you can and 2) hope that you have money because conservation things cost money they dont make it.
That saying you might be lucky.

I cant remember too much about the timetable but i know that 3rd year was my busiest year. i think 4 days a week with maybe 4 lectures a day...but the coursework is plenty.

Again i say though. i dont regret doing my degree as i met my best friends in 3rd year! and i love biology. If you get some experience now you'll do much better than me!

Thank you for all the tips, I really do appreciate them all...even the ones with bad news attached to them :P

Tbh, Zoology wasn't my first choice, but I didn't get into my first choice degree. My current goal is to progress to teaching

Well just keep motivated and work hard to stand out and youl do fine  best of luck!
So, we got info about our field trips today. The first one is a 1 week NON-Residential field trip. Really confused that they expect us to travel back and forth to Loch Lomond every day for 5 days!

And the Millport field trip in semester 2 is the week of my 21st birthday. Bad timing or what?!?

2nd year is a mixed bag of multiple choice, short answer questions and calculations.

3rd year exams are primarily made up of in-depth essays.

wht he says lol. 2ns year exams is a mix of everything. 3rd and 4th year are essays so get used to your hand almost falling off
Well...my 3rd year is over!

For anyone else in the position I was in last year and about to start Level 3 Zoology...well it is a lot of hard work. The lectures and labs are incredibly more detailed. Lots of coursework too. However, all in all, the year has been very positive! The trip to Millport was a lot better than I thought it would be - the right balance of hard work and socialising. Just waiting on my exam results...here's hoping!

I'm just starting level 3 at glasgow  Hopefully Genetics if I get into it, damn popularity I'll need to wait till June to find out, can't wait though! I hear I also get a Millport trip, despite doing nothing related to it at all... Reading party yeah!

Aww hello! I've probably walked passed you loads of times haha! Yeah genetics is a very popular subject, a few of my friends do it. Fingers crossed you get in  Yeah Geneticists go to Millport, only for 1 night but still...it's fun

How did your exams go?

Haha probably  I look forward to that one night at millport, I went for a night when I did biology in school too it was rather awesome in a really old fashioned sort of way ie. a photograph of a not-flat-screen computer monitor was taken

The exams went not bad, hoping for at least a couple of As to balance out the complete tragedy that was Molecules of Life :P You may have sat it or heard of it...

How about your 3rd year exams? Go okay?

I'm sure you have done well. I didn't sit molecules of life...thankfully! But all I heard throughout second year was everyone complaining about it. Seemed to be the most hated subject ever...along with Bioengineering and Global change (ugh, was so bad haha).

3rd year exams went not too bad. Pretty scary having to be able to write in so much detail though. If I have a B and a C i'll be happy enough

It really is/was the most hated subject :P I didn't take bioengineering and don't know anyone who did so thankfully stayed totally clear of that one

I'm freaking out a bit at having to write in so much detail, and a lack of multichoice! I'm going to miss it! I'm sure you'll have got good marks  Not long till we find out I suppose.

Hate to say, but all biology degrees have to do a Molecular Methods module in 3rd year...so you haven't seen the last of the gilson pipette! :P

The exam format is definitely a big change, but once you adapt your studying methods a little bit it isn't too bad. I think 3rd year biology results are out next Monday....eeep :| Really want to know, but at the same time I don't haha...walking contradiction :P

Are you doing anything nice over summer?

I've heard of this molecular methods thing! I've had serious lack of confidence in labs since starting at GU and a lecturer told me this year that no one fails molecular methods and it will make me feel better about myself though it's extremely boring. Alrighty then.

I've always liked writing essays, so I'm hoping I'll be able to adapt to that, it's just doing it under exam conditions is a little bit scary.

I read that the deadline for all exam results is 12th june, knowing my luck every single one of the 2nd year ones will be out on the last day, bleh! I'd kill to have mine on monday! I need to know how Molecules of Life went down, it may be blocking my future in genetics!

Edit: As for summer I'm doing absolutely nothing except being glad second year is over! And hopefully not studying for resits  What about you?

Really? About half of my class (and there are 100 of us) failed molecular methods. I just passed, but it was only worth 3% of our coursework so not a major deal. I actually found the MM labs not too bad! My labs this year mostly consisted of dissections.

If I remember correctly, I got my 2nd year exam results right at the start of June so hopefully you will too. I'm sure you have done just fine in Molecules of Life. If you remember, let me know how you do!

This summer I'm just trying to get a bit of work experience and like you, just enjoy being free
