I have the same problem, I went to the GP and they put me on oral anti-biotics for around a month until it was obvious it was just getting worse, so then I ended up in the hospital for a ****ing week on IV anti-biotics(they were going to operate but after a day on IV they figured nawww) then when I leave with the swelling down but the infection still there it comes back while on holiday, big bitch to get the oral anti-biotics while on holiday, then when I get back(and completed the course of anti-biotics) it isn't worse or better, go to consultant for check up and he tells me to just wait for things to settle down.

If I were you, I'd seriously just get them to operate on it, esp. if it's ingrown since you're going to get people saying it'll fall off, others saying it's ingrown, etc. and I've had this problem for way over 3 months now and I just wish they operated and drained it from the start. It'll only get worse if it's at the point pus is coming out.

I had this for ages... keep it clean with antiseptic or warm salt water until you can see a GP, I was on antibiotics for ages that didn't work, my toes used to be covered in pus and blood at the end of every day they were so bad... had them removed and they grew back ingrown so had the sides removed and they've been fine since! Def go and see a gp asap and don't try and cut any of it off yourself, that's what made mine so bad!

Sounds like an ingrown toenail. See your GP but it's likely he will give you penicillin or alternative antibiotic to reduce the infection then assess the nail for corrective surgery (cutting a small section of nail out). It's not harmful to leave it but it is painful.

I bet you've stubbed it 10 times more now it hurts.

Sorry mate.

On topic: bathe the toe in warm water and Dettol at least once a day
Try and clean underneath the nail with a knife if you can and cut away the part cutting into your toe if possible. If it's too painful then wait a day or two. This pretty much sorted out my ingrown nail to the extent that I don't have a problem with it now.

Or you could be conventional and go to the doctor.
See a doctor before it gets too bad.

I had an ingrown toe nail that was too infected that cleaning it and salt water etc didn't work. I had to have part of the nail removed, so now I have one normal toe and one weird looking toe.
Thanks for all the advice everyone. I've been bathing it in salt water , and cleaning it with antiseptic stuff .. but it still hurts like a mo fo. my usual podiatrist is on holiday for the 12th :frown: So trying to find someone with a good reputation.
I know this is an old thread... but for the future, I personally would:

Go to my GP, have them examine it, and see if they refer you to a foot specialist (Podiatrist/Chiropodist). And then, let the expert do what they do!

How is your toe now? What was the diagnosis? Has it healed?

I managed to get a Appointment with a podiatrist on the NHS, and they said my other big toe was going the same way so they took the sides off both the nails. Most horrific experience , 6 local anaesthetics into my toes, And when they were healing, my left one got infected twice , they're doing ok now, they're both regrowing so I've got half new nail half old nail.. Gross.

At least they are healing! I want to be a podiatrist, so I will be seeing that a lot... Can you tell me what the nail surgery was like? What did the podiatrist do?

I tried with no avail to get an infected ingrown toenail to heal naturally . It's a breeding ground for bacteria if you wear socks/shoes and not practical to clean several times a day in day to day life. It's likely the infection is underneath the nail itself which makes it even more difficult to clean.

In the end I got part of mine removed by the GP. The local anaesthetic stunk like a bitch for a brief moment but otherwise it was fine apart from hobbling around for a couple of days. They painted some stuff on that side of the nail to stop it growing back so quickly but in the end it all grew back.

I assume the stuff they 'painted' on the side of your nail was the acid to kill the root? (Something like that) ?

They put a tourniquet around my toes, and then put three injections of local anaesthetic into each toe. then on each the she used some special scissors to cut away the side of each nail. She then got some acid stuff and rubbed it along the side and underneath where your cuticle is, to kill off any nail s it doesn't grow back there. unfortunately my left toe didn't like all this, and bled for half an hour , had to sit with my leg on a nurses shoulder for half an hour. Then they dressed them, and was told to rest up for a week.

Ouch! Lol

Well my auntie is one, and she and all her colleagues call themselves chiropodists

chiropodists tend to do more basic procedures and is generally an outdated term. Us podiatrists can do much more than what a chiropodist does , like giving LAs and dispensing drugs and manufacturing insoles/gait analysis.

Chiropody tends to mean just basic stuff like toe nail cutting and callous removal

Can you tell this term also pisses me off?

the stuff painted on is phenol and it kills the matrix. Although it doesn't do this properly on everyone so some peopl find their nails growing back

I'll be doing nail surgery next year, learning the theory of local anesthetics and practising injection technique right now in preparation for realpatients :afraid:

yup, we're told to sort the infection out first if we can. Many reasons including the LA doesn't take so well if there is infection present

Except the thing is she does do all this stuff, so piss off yourself.
Listen, go and have the toenail removed completely. No joke, I've had more than 5 operations on both my big toes in the past for ingrowing toenails, and the best option is just to have them taken off. Skin will eventually grow back over it in the fashion of a nail, and on a minor note, it won't hurt quite as much when you stub it in future.
peace.
