Same choices, except i chose UCL over luffbra. Got an offer from all of them except UCL. Manchester has the better reputation and will probably be more attractive to employers but it's supposed to be amongst the hardest course for chemeng, but brum has much higher satisfaction however less than half of their graduates got a 2.1 or above according to unistats. It all depends on what you find most important in your choice

The fact that in Birmingham less than half the graduates got less than 2.1 means that they are crap students or that the course is hard?

Cheers what are u guna put down as your firm? I suppose the reason why manchester is more attractive to employers is because of its harder course.

I'll probs put Manc as my firm over UCL or Brum. It's not as bad as oxbridge, imperial or UCL, but yh after those it's like the hardest. ONE of the reasons why their graduates are so attractive is this (if you get my drift...:colonhash:), but there are loads of reasons why. I think they said that there are more chemeng jobs in the north-west than all the other parts of england combined and coz Manc is the only accredited uni in that region (...i think), so many of them get employed there. Manc also has an integrated Year In Industry and Year Abroad in it's options, which is very beneficial for obvious reasons. Apparently they have amongst the best employer reputations in the world and they have got the best career's service in the country. Manc is also a specialist in Engineering generally anyway, so they are naturally really respected in that field as well.

Haha that's a massive generalisation, mate. They coulda just had a bad year or smthng. I dont know why this is the case, esp since their satisfaction is so high, but you defo cant get in if you're a dummy. It is a 3 A uni for chemeng at the end of the day. Im sure if you just study hard enough there you'll get a 2.1. It may be coz they partied too hard or because the 1st year 30 hour contact time got to their heads. Ooooooooooor both.....
Is there a huge difference between meng and beng guys?
I can apply for like the 4th year in my third right?
I want to change my apps to Beng as i'm not 100 percent on getting the grades.

The first two years are usually identical in terms of content and you have until the end of the second to choose which route you want to take. Most uni's now have the same entry requirements for the BEng as the MEng so transfer is purely based on your attainment in the first two years. If you enter through the BEng then you should be able to transfer to the 4 year course, providing your grades at Uni are good enough for the transfer. They may ask you for 55-60% in the first two years.
Anyone at Imperial on wednesday?

Nope :frown: When did you apply and hear about your interview? I would rather receive a rejection right now than have to wait! :frown:

Have you applied from overseas as well? Because overseas applicants are not supposed to be interviewed and that's why I think we're having to wait so long before hearing anything... It is quite annoying though, I'd like to know too!

Well I applied in October and actually have an offer for chemistry but I asked if I could change course. I'm sure you'll hear soon!

Yeh they were saying the north west employs 60% of chemical engineering jobs when i went for my interview at manchester or something along those lines. the reason why birmingham appeals to me is because it isnt to far and also its a smaller department, however im not sure whether to take this as a good thing or bad thing, as it could mean more or less support. Also at the birmingham open day they prided themselves on ther research, and it also offers a year in industry haha. But yeah jobs as job prospects go i think manchester wins hands down, but the student satisfaction levels at manchester are worryingly low compared to other universitys

I personally dont take that satifaction thing to heart at all. There are so many reason why they dont represent the quality of teaching at all. Satisfaction is easy for unis to cheat on. In fact it's probably encouraged, because it's the only thing that brings up a small unis reputation. Also, satisfaction is all about perspective. If you go to a better uni, the course is probably harder, you dont get spoon fed at all and you'll expect better teaching. This means that they're more critical about the course. This is why private dentists have in fact more complaints than NHS dentists.

Manchester has in fact the third most research intensive uni for chemeng. Their RAE value was 3.10 compared to Brum's 2.80 (it's out of 4.0). Manchester has a year in industry as well, in fact its integrated into the course.

No I'm not an overseas student :P I think I'm just a late applicant, because they seem to have dealt with all the early birds :/ Good luck to you though!

Ahh I see. I applied in November, but it's just a little worrying waiting for so long! Oh well, I'll just have to wait and see. Good luck for your interview!

Any one have any thoughts on sheffield for chemical engineering. i have an offer but am slightly confused about how well respected it is. Last year in cug rankings it was fourth, this year its 13th. It dosnt seem to be a particularly popular choice either. How would people compare its reputation to the likes of birmingham, bath and nottingham?
Cheers

Sheffield overall is very good for engineering but I think chemical is it's weakest department. I visited Sheffield for an engineering summer school and its certainly the smallest engineering department there. Bath and Nottingham are considered to be better - not too sure on Birmingham, though.

I came in here though to say my offer from Teesside for chem eng just came through so 5/5 offers  Now to pick my firm and insurance... D:

Congrats.

I did like sheffield as a city and uni however.

Where did you apply to?

Yeah, the city is great and so's the uni, and the accommodation is lovely too

I applied to Leeds, Sheffield, Loughborough, Teesside and Cardiff (though Cardiff was just Chemistry)
