Why Do Women Sit In The Middle Lane?

Isn't one reason why people prefer the middle lane (and it isn't just women) that lane one often has a very poor surface, heavily chewed up by trucks and even with ruts running down it? Quite a bit of the M6 and M25 are like that.
When I drive really fast I don't like being in the left-hand lane much just because you have to keep weaving around lorries. But then I've noticed most people who hog the middle lane are not going very fast.
