Hi all

Anyone here applied for and recieved DSA's?? I really should crack on and fill in the student finance application but I always put forms off (it's like phoning the bank or the DWP...excuciating  )

I know OU student though AS might come under specific learning disability, but some others I've asked said it would probably be the other category (like mental health). Has anyone actually been through this and knows?

Also, the unis themselves are confusing me. They say at one time it's worth applying for DSA, then say oh, they'll sort everything out, and all I need to do is being them the evidence when I start and they'll arrange all the support. So is it worth getting DSA anyway?

I contacted my uni first about getting tested. Whilst I am not sure what DSA will do for me, (I already claim it for visual impairment) I have been told to apply. I don't think it matters as such what it comes under. There might be an "other" box if you feel that AS isn't one of them listed.

DSA also include exam arrangements if that's relevant to you. It's not just equipment.

I didn't know about exam arrangements. I've been on +25% for GCSE and A Level, and I still barely finish essay questions because my fingers shake terribly and start twitching so I have to stop writing for a minute or so otherwise they practically seize up :frown:

I think I am going to apply then. I do also use computer equipment in class instead of handwritten notes

Annoyingly there is no 'other' box. The problem is that SLD's require a post-16 report but physical and mental health do not. I don't have any post-16 reports or assessments because I was diagnosed young and had everything put in place before then. So if I apply MH and it's actually SLD I get rejected and have no prospect of getting it at all in time. I'll try phoning student finance again and asking I guess

You can get a computer at A-Level! My writing is appalling, I can't grip pens properly and I'm really slow, plus my writing is illegible. It makes a massive difference. Go to your SEN department or a teacher at your school and ask for a laptop in exams, unfortunately you might have to fight for it a bit, but they should give you one. Sorry that's not about DSA or anything (I'm stuck too...) but I thought it might still be helpful.
I have Aspergers, diagnosed at 16 and I'm now 19.

Where do I start:

Clumsy and uncoordinated, I don't lift my feet up when walking, often end up tripping up. I didn't crack an egg properly until I was 17 or couldn't use a tin-opener until I was 16. I am learning to drive though  with my test coming up!

I have spells with my my interests, go for something for a 2-3 years then move on and change my mind.

My interests:
Non-League Football has this since I was about 8 but I like the professional stuff as well
Ground-hopping - I basically just go to different football grounds, usually somewhere different every weekend, from the West Midlands to Wales to Cumbria to North Yorkshire to the East Midlands I've a large area which I travel in, at the moment I've been to 258 grounds, some park pitches, some professional and a great deal in between.
I love real ale and will always attempt to try something different when I go drinking, I did score them for a while but got bored of forgetting to score them after a skinful. In addition to that, Belgian Beers, I love the stronger ones, this is a newer interest of mine but I'm off to Belgium in September for a beer trip...
Politics - member of a party, quite a few people I follow on twitter are politics related, passionate about my beliefs - I'm a Libertarian, as an Aspergers 'sufferer' I believe individuals are important. I've only really taken an interest in ideology since I was 17 though.
History - bit of a normal interest really, doing a combined honours degree in History and Politics
Railways - I'm not a trainspotter, but know bits about the trains themselves, the stations, destinations etc. I like to keep track of how many 'rail miles' I cover and which bits of track I've travelled on, but this isn't obsessive...

Anyway interests aside, I'll continue...

Statistics - I love stats, I keep records of all the beers I try in a spreadsheet, brewery, beer, %, location of the brewery, date tried and type of beer, I've tried 35 different beer types. Football ground records: Teams, score, ground name, admission, travel cost, game rating, miles travelled, attendance, money on beer/food spent, goals scored in total and date... been keeping these since I started ground-hopping in mid 2009. I'm probably going to compile a list of every single football game I've attended one day, it would take hours!

I'm hypersensitive - its awful especially when a girl swings an arm across for a cuddle...:frown:

I can often buy a pair of jeans or a hoodie and obsessively wear them for weeks/months then just one day, find something else to wear and obsessively wear that for weeks on end. But I do dress fashionably... Gio Goi etc

Think outside the box? No chance

Social situations, I have a small group of friends but get on with them...

I don't make new friends that easily but tend to make friends with those of similar interests...

I'll probably come back and add a bit more to this later... on a break from a Uni Seminar haha.

I thought about asking for one for my history exam. My only worry is that I make far more spelling mistakes on computers (I hit the wrong keys constantly!) than in handwritten work, so I worry I'll waste time correcting all my spelling. Still, I type fast on computer so I think it would be very helpful. Might help with Biology as well I guess.

Chemistry, too many diagrams to make it worthwhile. Mind you, there's barely any long writing in it anyway, so it doesn't matter too much (although I still only just finished even with all the extra time!)

Thanks, I think I will ask about it. Luckily, my school are very accomodating (which is why we picked it in the first place). When looking around secondary schools, several hinted they didn't want me (one school outright said they wouldn't have me there) but my school looked at my horrid reports and statement and said that they thought I would do well here  They do bend over backwards when I really need something, and since they now know how much class computer has helped, exam computer would hopefully be fine as well. Wish everyone's school would do that as well, its horrid fighting for something you really need :frown:

I do that a bit too but I find it's easier to check and correct on a screen and I always have a little bit of time over to check it which is good. It's good your school is so helpful  Wish mine was, they've flat out refused to give me certain support and told me to just "learn to deal with it, it'll be helpful to you long-term!"

  at your school

I thougt about it more today, and I am going to ask about a laptop for my history exam. I just can't write anywhere near the speed I would need to in a handwritten exam

I was flicking through some news, and found an article in the DM about autism. Basically saying what we already knew - older parents are more likely to have autistic kids but no one really knows why. And stupidly I decided to look at the comments..mostly they were good, but all it takes is one ignorant sh*t to ruin your afternoon...."AS is because of teenage feckless ignorant parents who want benefits" blah blah blah  head--->brick wall. Really wished the bloody woman was standing in front of me so I could personally show her what happens when people insult my parents.

It's starting to snow now, and I cba with it. I can't look where I'm going when the ground is fine because I can't sense the length of my stride..in the snow it's bloomin' impossible

ETA - I do love snow  I just look like a clown in it

Hope everyone's doing good this evening

This doesn't surprise me. I think replied to that article and said how not everyone with Autism has those kind of behaviour difficulties. (mine are down to depression / the fact that I have a head injury and part of my brain missing)

You may need medical evidence for this to happen.
Good to see a thread has been set up  ! How is everyone coping with the cold weather/snow? It's not snowed here yet (we must be one of the lucky places), but it is sure freezing! I haven't really bothered leaving my flat bedroom today (except to go to the kitchen and make a drink) lol.

Well, as I said, I look like a clown trying to walk in it  I also hate cold weather (I also really hate very hot weather so England is generally a perfect place to live!!). I stay inside and curse high heating bills

Given the lack of sun, it makes everything so much easier for me. But it's very cold!

How is everyone doing? :hugs:
I live in Derbyshire right on the Pennines, 4 inches outside and VERY cold! Funny thing about Aspergers is just not knowing how others feel, I get on with a lot of people at Uni but I never grasp it when they've had enough of me talking. I do tend to get on with a lot of people at Uni, first time in my life I've had more mutual respect between me and my peers than ever before  that said I do commute through... so I've only a few hours a week to piss people off  lol
My bro has AS, feel sorry for him sometimes, hmmm life's hard
To be fair life isn't 'hard' it can just have its difficult stages, good days and bad days. Those that are good, make me ecstatic, those that are bad sink me into depression for a bit. That's my experience anyway.

This! And sometimes you just have a horrid time for weeks on end. But it gets better again

Right now I'm extremely happy....I was supposed to be sitting in a feezing cold church today playing my violin, but because of the snow it's been cancelled! I love lazy Sundays
Oh, I forgot
Lipstick Kisses - I started Skyrim last night, and got to Level 5. It is really fun  But not used to it yet so still hard to move around

Snow's starting to melt now :frown:

Skyrim is amazing! I love this game. Played it for hours and hours and hours... Sadly, I've got too much to do right now to continue playing for a while. :frown:

Damn, I really should have written down what my GP told me. I forgot if he will call me when he found a specialist or if I have to call him or if the specialist will call me. I listened intently to what he was saying, but none of the information he gave me was absorbed. So frustrating and it happens all the time! Which is also why I started bringing a dictaphone along to my lectures. In the last three semesters I had to learn everything by book because I couldn't retain a single word that was being said in lectures - unless it was something I have already read. If I read something and tell someone about what I have read, then that seems to go into my long-term memory. Maybe I should use this to my advantage.

I'm a Wood Elf called Holly Short (with some funny accents over the o's and y). Showing my Artemis Fowl obsession just slightly

You?
