The newly revamped TSR Asperger's Society!

What is Asperger's Syndrome? (taken from the National Austistic Society Page)

Asperger syndrome is a form of autism, which is a lifelong disability that affects how a person makes sense of the world, processes information and relates to other people. Autism is often described as a 'spectrum disorder' because the condition affects people in many different ways and to varying degrees.

Asperger syndrome is mostly a 'hidden disability'. This means that you can't tell that someone has the condition from their outward appearance. People with the condition have difficulties in three main areas. They are:

- social communication
- social interaction
- social imagination

While there are similarities with autism, people with Asperger syndrome have fewer problems with speaking and are often of average, or above average, intelligence. They do not usually have the accompanying learning disabilities associated with autism, but they may have specific learning difficulties. These may include dyslexia and dyspraxia or other conditions such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and epilepsy.

What's the purpose of this thread?

It's mainly a place where us Aspies can discuss our experiences chat, and talk hang out really. Since last year, the thread has died so I thought that it needed a slight revamp and revival

My personal experience

I was dignosed with Asperger's Syndrome at the age of 12. I have been learning to try and deal with social situations better but there are situations where I do find it quite overwhelming to be in. But hopefully that barrier can break down  My main problem is that I also am not able to make eye contact very well and may not be able to pick up on other people's emotions very well. But life goes on and I take every day one step at a time

Post away :yep:

Hi

I have AS with Anxiety and Depression. I was diagnosed 13 years ago.
It affects me socially and Academically. I take jokes seriously etc. I am good at remembering dates, facts and figures. I can't explain my points when I type essays.
I want to go into Politics as a career.
hi guys  dont know how popular a thread for people with limited social skills will be teehe. but hi anyway

I've always wondered whether this was because of my AS :holmes: I can explain everything perfectly well verbally but really struggle on paper, which frustrates me no end.
Good evening, all and sundry.

Paradoxically, I'm mainly here to socialise.
This is (at least?) the third attempt at an AS society thread... I wonder how it'll turn out.

Anyhow, hi. Unfortunately I have Asperger's too. Even though I'm useless in social situations I'd say my biggest problem is whatever's going on in my brain that doesn't let me process information like a normal person. University has been a nightmare so far. *sigh*

How does your brain process information, do you think?
Hi, don't know if I'd be welcome, but my boyfriend has AS and I'd like to understand more about it. He will talk about it openly to me, but there are some things that he says/does, and I don't know whether it's just a man thing or whether it's specifically because he has AS (in which case I'd feel guilty for having a go at him over it). I won't ask anything yet, as I don't know if I'm welcome yet, but hi to everyone anyway!

Secondly, if there is anything is particular that you would like to know, just let me know

I think you'd be welcome here! Can't speak for everyone, but anyone willing to learn more about AS is welcome to talk to me about it, it's great some people are trying to understand.

Speaking in terms of academics, it seems that I can only take in information that is in a written format (and not bullet points, but nice descriptions with context and everything). And all sorts of graphs and tables are good, I have a sort of photographic memory. However, everything verbal... I may as well be deaf. Also, I can only take in one kind of information at once and that piece has to be processed before another "layer" can be added. I terms of academics, the complete change in environment has made me go from being the top student in a gifted kids program to having the mental processing power of a turnip.

(I wonder if there could be something else wrong, neurologically? I've had neuropsych tests done and the results were abnormal.)
