Guide To Student Finance for Medicine 2012/2013

Hello could someone please explain the whole process of undergraduate medical students applying for the 5 year course in 2012, what finance is avaliable whether it be tuition or maintenance loans, from nhs and slc. How much do we pay and what support is available as there doesn't seem to be any conclusive guide anywhere as to how it will all work.

Many thanks
The arrangements for graduate medical students on a five year course are different. In the first four years of the course, they are not eligible to receive a loan for tuition fees or a maintenance grant regardless of whether or not they have previously received funding. However, students may be able to apply for a full, income based, maintenance loan from Student Finance England. From year five of the training, graduate medical students receive the same support as undergraduate medical students.

If you've already funded a degree with SFE you won't be entitled to any loans, if your first degree was funded by the NHS e.g physio you can apply for loans and stuff from SFE as if it was your first degree

Where did you find this out? It is my understanding that it is always previous study that counts, regardless of how it was financed. This, to my knowledge has always been SF's way and it's the first time I've heard of SF taking into account how previous study was financed.

is this your first degree? if so you recieve the same support as everyone else, and this carries on throughout the pre clinical years- so student loan, and maintainance grant if your parental income is under the £42,000 threshold. If your a graduate about to start a medical degree see the previous poster
