What sort of practice?

I know most of you don't know for sure which area of veterinary practice you want to go to when you graduate (even if you aren't at university yet) but im just intrigued which areas at the moment you were most interested in?

Personally i can't imagine doing anything other than large animal (chances are would go into mixed as very very rare to hear about purely large animal based practices/vets).

I'm not sure of the feasibility of it or not (not being in Uni yet), but i'd like to go into the Equine side of it...

Large animal! Although id quite like to specialise in donkeys! (quite hard to do i would think!) but they are so cool! Theres always the donkey sanctuary i guess! Also i quite like the idea of doing wildlife/conservation medicine abroad somewhere!

Either farm or equine, i really can't decide but plenty of time lol

Farm or mixed- I know there's hardly any solely farm animal practices in the UK, might consider moving abroad. Hey, I've got 5 years to decide- and I'd def like to do some research, put my muddy fingerprint on the record of scientific advancements (yeah right)...
I'm not up for having the majority equine work (although rather be a horsey vet than no vet!) I'm just not horsey enough, I'd be scared of horse moaners, sorry, owners.
Exotics- maybe, but cows and pigs and sheep are where it's at!

I've always wanted to go into small animal practice and specialise in orthopaedics, although im now starting to lean towards equine - plenty of orthopaedic opportunities there:p:
I'll porbably change my mind a good few more times throughout the course, all I know for sure is that its a definite NO to large animal work. I couldn't constantly work under conditions where everything comes down to economics and even though the animal could easily be treated quite often they are destroyed. I prefer the small animal practice where every animal is treated individually and there is plenty of opportunity for me to develop surgical skill.

Definately small animal all the way...I can't resist the small furry things!!

I don't particularly like horses (..great vet I'll be!!) and although I love cows etc, large animal really does not appeal to me, theres way too many problems in the farming industry etc, it would be fun, but I think I'll stick to pets!!

Although 7 years down the line, I may have completely changed my mind of course!

Horses aren't generally large animals (what am i saying?!!) erm, the divisions tend to be small animal, farm/ food animal and equine cos thats how rotations are set out.

I don't like horsey paople either- everyone back home wants me to be a horsey vet just cos i'm good with them , but even being a horse owner myself, you couldn't pay me to work with horsey people. Although look at me in 2 years time and i may end up eating my words lol!

Hmmmmm I kind of agree about horsey people but there not all bad! But theres loads of good stuff about equine work. Like its outdoors which is a huge plus for me and the amin reason why i dont really want to do small animals but obviously thats true of farm animals too!
But most horses are insured which means you can go for more complex interesting proceedures in normal practice than you could with farm animals, and that would be really good.
Having said that i thnk at the moment im swaying towards a farm vet:biggrin:
Well I am glad large animal practice is growing at such a huge rate - imagine if the number of jobs for farm animal vets wasn't increasing and all of you couldn't get these jobs. Thank the lord we are all realists!
It's all about the cows!

Not being at uni myself, and perhaps being slighlty naive, but whats so wrong with horsey people? are they that bad?!!

Well, not much really, i suppose its wrong in a way to tar them all with the same brush, but in equine practice there's a certain type you meet who make their own diagnoses based on some old wivestale another horsey person once told them, are adament that you should carry out procedures you don't want to do, and as for the politics of showing, don't get me started!!.......

They're quite prepared to load their horses up with unproven neutraceuticals, use fancy, expensive training methods and invest in gadgets to make their horse work how they want it to and yet think twice at calling the vet out when we really should be there. Not all hp's are the same- i'm a closet one lol! but there's always some there to take the edge of you're job and they're far more prevalent than in SA or LA practice, in my experience.

I am a "horsey person" and have to agree... There are quite a few "know it alls" who only call the vet out because they can't prescribe their own medication... But horsey people aren't all bad and most are very grateful I'd say!

I'm fairly interested in a research position rather than practice work, just think.. no owners at all...! Although most owners I have met are really nice, and besides they don't shout at the vet, they shout at the person on the front desk (that would be me...).

I think like with many things a few people give everyone the wrong impression eg people think anyone who watches football is a yob, anyone whos against animal testing is lunatic who firebombs research labs lol
I have horses but im always willing to learn and call the vet if we are in any doubt about there health. We listen to what they say and carry out any recommended treatment and from work experience and meeting people id say most are like that.
However, there are arrogant people who think that cos they could ride before they could walk they have knowledge which equates to a five year degree and that they are superior to almost everybody else lol!^o)
Well i've not really decided yet but definately not equine, im not very horsey myself! I think i would be more comfortable in small animal practice because that's what i am most familiar with - having said that i would love to work with wild animals some time in the future  :penguin: :elefant:
