Interesting. I would love to see Berkeley...Ive done most East Coast and middle US main ones.

Personally, prefer East Coast tho! Surprised, as always thought Id be more West Coast...

There's a lot more space in the West coast, hence everything's on a grander scale and people tend to be more relaxed I think.

New York is not that different to London, people are always busily running around the place.

Berkeley is not as nice as Stanford but the pace of life seems slower than San Francisco as it's on the other side of the bay.

Palo Alto is an affluent area, as is evident from the mini shopping center, selling luxury brands and nothing else!

Hmmm. Yes you are right. Im often surprised with how ignorant a lot of people are tbh.

But then, I tend to find the smart ones are ludicrously smart. Thats the thing about LSE, Imperial - compared to Stanford etc, I think there are a lot more people right at the top end.

If you got a 2:2 tho, it would be really tough to get into the city. I doubt they virtually ever interview someone with that, hence he/she probs wouldnt know.

Depends when the 2:2 was achieved and from which institution.

Years ago, any degree was good enough, then there was the 2:1 criteria.

Now I have seen cases whereby for most technical jobs in the City, employers favour grads from places like France, Germany and Poland, given the material they cover far exceeds the UK's undergrad degrees and that includes Imperial and Oxbridge!

Hmmm. Yes Ive heard rumors of that. What are you actually doing right now? Have you graduated/working? Are you based in London?

Yes I know - I studied there for a bit! How come you have been there?

Its not as beautiful as Oxford, Cambridge tho! Dont you think? But the weather etc excels. The cab drivers all carry guns. We were advised to never leave campus walking, always get a cab.

That sounds a bit alarmist. You can walk to downtown Palo Alto fairly easily from the Stanford campus (it would take 20 mins or more, though). It's one of the most affluent areas in California (if not the US?) and I wouldn't feel unsafe walking around there at all... There are definitely US schools that are in awful neighborhoods (USC, for instance!) but Stanford's alright.

Maybe - but that was the advice when I was there. Yes, Palo Alto is amazing. I love it.

Where are you in Mass?

My husband's family come from the area, I love it there- it really is great. We'd love to end up back in the Bay Area eventually.

I live in the Boston metro area, in Cambridge, which is OK, but I certainly don't like it as much as CA.

I'm currently an international student interested in applying to both sides of the atlantic for university. I was wondering apart from Oxbridge, which British universities can compete with the Ivy League schools in terms of:

-Teaching Quality
-Job prospects (in general)
-International Prestige/Reputation/wow factor (whatever you wanna call it)

Hi Mierder,

I will try as much as possible to give you collated public research that can help you find insights into the British universities that can compete with Ivy League.

Teaching Quality is a subjective, so it is hard to detail which universities are top for teaching outside Oxbridge. In the UK, contact time with lecturers at the top universities is quite low. But if you are talking about research quality and funding potential like the ivy leagues have to attract the best lecturers, take a look at these.

http://www.nairaland.com/141689/rough-guide-best-most-reputable/5#6538557

So for teaching quality, I would go for:

LSE, KCL, Edinburgh, Imperial, Liverpool, Glasgow, St Andrews, UCL and Manchester.

For job prospects, have a look at these:

So for job prospect, I would go for:

LSE, Imperial, UCL, KCL, Edinburgh, Birmingham, Nottingham and Manchester.

For international prestige and reputation see these:

So for international prestige, I would go for:

Imperial, UCL, KCL, LSE, Edinburgh, Manchester and Bristol.

So overall, I would suggest it is:

LSE, Imperial, UCL, KCL and Edinburgh that can match the Ivy League. Followed by the like of Manchester.

Take a look at this author’s own comparison with Ivy Leagues:

OXBRIDGE IS NOT IVY LEAGUE!!! Look for russell brand universities, or simply google "university league tables" for detailed university ratings. Edinburgh, Durham, LSE, Kings, Manchester (University of, not metropolitan), Cardiff, Nottingham (University of, not Nottingham Trent), Bristol, Sussex, and obviously Cambridge and Oxford, these are ivy league equivalent UK universities.

I would add to your list, in terms of hype (or even over hyped!) it would be:

St. Andrews, Oxford, Exeter, Cambridge, Durham

From what I can understand and grasp, Harvard, Oxford, Cambridge, UCL are pretty much the undisputed top 4 in the world.

You're having a laugh if you think UCL is above MIT. UCL isn't top 4 in the world, and MIT tops, or comes close to, a lot of rankings internationally
Original post by ogioh
I'm not really, the rankings fluctuate a lot so I'm not going by the book as such. I'm going by the positions each Uni is normally at on those lists and reputation.

MIT is still far more universally acclaimed than UCL but whatever.

Yeah MIT is the best for almost every course it offers both salary wise and academically. Ucl is no way near MIT. Where did u get this info from. If it was a international ranking site thats cos the weightings are adjusted to which uni offers the best option for FOREIGN students

ucl???

I hear their advanced hair dishevelling courses are excellent.

Also, they do a great summer school in inexplicable Lothario studies.

I'm totally aware of the numbers, especially at Penn. I still hold firm that it bears very little significance to the factors you ardently seem to think money has a direct correlation too. There is no notable difference between facilities, teaching or research quality between Penn and Edinburgh despite a difference in endowments. If anything, Penn has poorer facilities and teaching. I had an interesting conversation with the manager of the Penn endowment (forgot his exact title) about this while at Penn. He knows little about the endowment system in the UK but mentioned this is due to a huge difference in university systems, funding and alumni donations. It is naive and ignorant to simply point at a cash comparison as being a deciding factor in these areas.

To the recent posts:

- All university rankings are disputed
- There are many UK universities on par with or better than Ivy League universities in teaching, research and facilities from my own personal experience.
Well, really, for the things your looking for, you should just look at international rankings, not ivy league, as not all the ivy league unis are the best in the world, UCL ranks 4th right now. And MIT probably number 1. Ivy league is a term for describing some of the oldest new england universities (and their sports league against each other), not prestige. Cal tech would be one of the better ones, and it isnt Ivy league. I think the OP's quesiton is stupid.
