Reapplicant question

How do u universities such as oxbridge UCL or imperial look at applicants who did badly in their AS year, but knuckled down in A2 and got something like A*AAa and applied during a gap year, would it be looked down upon?

I'm pretty sure it wouldn't matter as the A level grades are what count.

but wouldn't a candidate who has AAAA at AS look better?

No. In fact once you have your A level grades you don't even need to list your AS grades from those A levels.
