http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-22076705

The US Navy has developed a laser which it says can shoot down small aircraft such as drones.

Officials say the laser system will be deployed in 2014 aboard the USS Ponce.

Harry Low reports.

Wouldnt mind having one of these... living next to an airfield where theyre constantly [and illegally] flying small planes over my house im sure this might prove useful :colonhash:

Maybe, but they're going to use these because they're cheaper than conventional guns, so it's not a bottomless pit.

Cheaper than existing systems.
Doesn't require as much space as existing systems.
Doesn't weigh as much as existing systems.
Doesn't pose as much of an explosive risk as existing systems.

Is a little bit cool.

I must ask why South Korea on that list?:P Personally i think the US theyre far to find of invading people... russia just likes to arm the other side but stay out

To efficiently kill people.

To efficiently defend themselves.

Easy to make biased statements.

Can these lasers be mounted on the heads of sharks?

But, it doesn't necessarily kill because countries can use drones you know.

Even if it's not killing people, it will still 'kill' (destroy) the drone. And ultimately, it will probably be used on manned aircrafts.

Killing and destroying are two different words brah with two different connotations. Killing brings up imagery of taking human life, destroying brings up imagery of destruction of machinery.

Also, unmanned aircrafts seems to be the way the world is heading.
