Switch from History at QM to SOAS?

Hi all, I have a place to study history at QM in September but have just got back from travelling Thailand, Laos and Cambodia for two months which has changed my direction a bit, excuse me if I sound like a cliche gap yah tosser. I am now desperate to learn a new language and have become interested in SE Asian History e.g. the Khmer empire or the secret war on Laos. I have also fallen in love with SE Asian culture and would possibly like to live in Thailand, possibly teach english after my studies.

What would your opinions be on dropping History at QM for History & SE Asian Studies at SOAS? Would it be a rash decision because I've got the travel bug or have I just been lucky enough to find an interest in something that isn't normally quite as accessible?

Any general advice would be amazing, I've got very little time and I'm quite undecided!

I think you need to do your research on SOAS! Maybe visit it too and see if you like it before you pull out of your Queen Mary place. Do you have a place at SOAS? If not, then I think you would need to go through clearing. Don't think they have history in clearing - but you could look at another course similar and see if you can get a place and then maybe you would have chance to swap. SOAS is definitely a great place to be if you're interested in Asian and African study.

I think it depends really-if you feel that you're really passionate about SE Asian history and you want that to be your focus, then it sounds like SOAS is the place for you. SOAS is very specialist, but I think if you feel that you've discovered something you want to study you should embrace the opportunity. Do you have a place at SOAS? Maybe speak to someone there or visit the Uni to get a real feel of the place.

Also consider that since QM is part of the University of London so I'm pretty sure, you're able to take modules from other universities-which could allow you to study at QM but take history modules focusing on SE Asia at SOAS.

I was going with the idea of embracing my new interest but eventually decided against it opting to change to history & politics at QM which is also very interesting but could be more useful after studying than SE Asian studies. Instead I will study a language outside my course. Also I think I prefer QM over SOAS so that was a deciding factor. There's much more going on at QM, its cheap to live nearby and I heard many bad things about SOAS.
