I'm not entirely sure what all the fuss about how many GCSEs you're getting is about. At my public school we can get around 10-12 GCSEs overall and I personally am looking at 11.
What is the average number of GCSEs elsewhere? How many are you taking?

I was taking: Triple science Maths English Language English literature ICT RE Spanish History If I was to pass them all (C's and above) I would get 11 GCSE's, plus I did a IGCSE English exam at the end of year 9 and I got a C in that so if I was to include that I would overall have 12.

I'm taking 12 overall. I took 3 early though, 1 in year 9 and 2 in year 10.
I did IGCSE English last year and this year I'm doing 13 GCSEs including Further Maths so I'll have 14 in total.. Most other people in my school are taking about 9 or 10.
Biology, chemistry, English literature, English language, French, further maths, history, maths, music, photography, physics, statistics and core science.
I took maths in year 9 so had time to do statistics and further maths as well and we did core science exams last year for some reason so I have 4 science GCSEs.
I am getting 11. Private grammar school, so you can see there is not real fuss!
I am doing: -(IGCSE) Double Science award (2 sciences, only 2 GCSES out of it) -(IGCSE) Maths -English Language - English Literature - French - Product Design - Business Studies - Religious Studies - Geography
And I did Chinese GCSE in Year 10 outside of school.
- IGCSE are international GCSES and are considered harder than normal GCSES but still worth just one GCSE

There are quite a few people who have taken their GCSEs in year 9 it seems - I had no idea this was an option! Is this common?

I don't know. There wasn't many people in my school who did it. Only the top set so I don't think many people do. You're not allowed to do it anymore though

That's 8 GCSEs, 1 BTEC (which is pointless, really), and an FSMQ.

Most people do 9.5 at my school, but it was 'suggested' to a few of us that we shouldn't continue certain subjects beyond year 10, so I don't do chemistry. I'm predicted all A*/A so I doubt number makes much of a difference? Its a bit unfair to discriminate based on number of subjects as its not like you can really choose....
