No that didn't change, I'm relatively left wing, so maybe that's some of why i like the north more

Go up to the Highlands and tell them you're a socialist...

Prepare to be shot.

Anyway, I do prefer Scotland generally. That said though, I will undoubtedly live in London for a few years for the experience. No Scottish city can even come close to the nature of London.

That's true but that's good imo. I would much rather live in Glasgow or Edinburgh than London personally. They're the right kind of size, and have more charm too. Oh, and cheaper:smile:

I think London is brilliant, I love this place!

When I was in Cumbria, someone said hello to me on a field and I ran for my life thinking i was gonna get hung, drawn and quartered... then I remembered this wasn't London where it would actually happen, and that the granny on the field was just being nice and freindly as they are further up north

Conclusion: don't talk to strangers in London cos they're mean, and those up north are friendlier
London wins anyday.
Its brilliant there are loads of people so you feel like a community but also very much on your own.

the locals are noway near as nice as in england. I must admit many are nice, particularly the older ones, a minority are not...i guess snobbyish. Plus being in scotland theres always the anti-english folk too.

That's true. I found more extremes up there, some anti-English but some really nice too. Again, I reckon your area of England is freindlier than mine though.

I completely disagree with you. Having also lived and gone to school in Edinburgh for eight years, I really cannot think of anything to justify your claims. On the other hand, I found Nottingham to be a somewhat unpleasant place to live. The vast majority of friendly people belonged to the Asian, Jewish and Eastern European communities, whereas the English people who surrounded us in our conservative middle class area, and the small independent school I went to, were often disinclined towards anyone possessing a Scottish accent.

Living in England you find plenty of anti-Scottish folk too. What's your point?

I'm a Highland socialist!
Socialists in the Highlands are really nice actually, especially considering it's a bit devoid of any decent politicians. Certainly, I got very involved in the last election and from that the SSP were the only ones that I didn't hate by the time it finished.

Different here. There are some real small minded bastards....

I worry about the general TSR belief that people in Scotland are anti-English to any significant degree. Yes, I'll admit there's some bigots out there, but I wouldn't have thought it's the sort of thing you'd come across in every-day life. How a Scottish person can be anti-English is beyond me - there are huge numbers of people who are English to different degrees living up here.

Anyway, one of the bad points about Scotland that I'd point out is that we're probably the most violent white people in the world. Highest murder rate in Europe, very high comparative violent crime rate. And of course it's the fault of the police, who don't seem all that bothered by it. And luckily it's concentrated to only certain parts of the nation.

in terms of crime, scotland (or rather edinburgh) has certainly a lot less than at home.

Really? I knew that Glasgow has the worst murder rate of any western-European city. didn't know it applied to all of Scotland.

Admittedly I've never been to Scotland, but I find where I live (Essex) to be quite nice, although misunderstood by people who've never been here and so automatically assume we're all the same :p: The weather's just right, the people are generally nice - friendlyish but still respectful of people's privacy (I get the impression that people further north are extremely nosey!) There's lots to do and it's near London, and yet there's still the countryside and the coast if you like that kind of thing. It's got everything! I definitely wouldn't say that people here are snobbish...
Despite being English by blood, and having an English accent, I have lived in Scotland all my life. During those 17 years I have experienced a great deal of Anti-Englishness, be it c**ts making fun of my accent, or everyone displaying the oppositions' flags when England are playing someone in football. I've heard people call the English arrogant, stuck up, unfriendly, stupid.

Once, one of my friends saw a map of Scotland and goes "that's the best map of Great Britain, one without England on it!". I just rolled my eyes. It's petty things a lot of the time but it pisses me off to no end!

It makes me laugh when Scots get annoyed at Americans referring to Britain in general as England. People tend to forget that England DOES house 90% of the British population, so Americans could be forgiven for disregarding the other countries involved.
