Why are some parents so narrow minded

One of my close friends who is an amazing guy wanted to marry a girl (the girl is okay with marrying him) so he asked his parents to go and meet the girls parents to discuss about marriage. However the girls parents denied it because he's pakistani and she's afghan. Seriously why? this just makes me upset as they probably won't be able to get married now. :-(

Why do parents have to be involved? Over the age of 18 you don't need parents permission to get married. If you go to Gretna Green you don't need permission at 16. If it's that serious they can elope.
