If it was actually flagged as late, then it is entirely up to the uni. Bearing in mind that UCAS has some leeway, and many unis do too. What happened a year ago to someone else isn't much of a guide tbh.

I sent mine off at 17:57 - I had to send without reference as I started my application this afternoon. Best of luck to is both!
