sweden or the UK?

Hi everyone!
I am an international student and have narrowed down the admissions I've received to the following programs:
1- Taught MSc in data science with one year placement work at Surrey university
2- taught MSc in data science (No placement) at Lancaster
3- taught MSc in data science at University of Aberdeen
4- MSc computational science at Uppsala University (2 year program)
I'm quite stuck in making a decision.
(a 2 year program is nice. a placement year is nice too. and also the UK is offering a 2 year work visa permit any thoughts on that compared to Sweden and whether I could land a job? My aim is to go for a PhD in the future, hopefully. Any help which one will be the BETTER choice?
Also any thought on living expenses?
By the way Thank you very much in advance.

Please keep in mind that if you want to find a job in Sweden you kind of must learn the language. The UK would be easier as you would only need English.

Hi there!

It's great to hear you may be considering Surrey! Is there anything you would like to know about Surrey or if you have any questions please let me know, so I can answer these for you  I am a second year Psychology student and have just recently sourced a placement for my placement year, so even if you did have questions about placement too, let me know

As for making a decision, it may be helpful in considering the pros and cons of being in the UK and pros and cons of being in Sweden. This can be anything simple from weather or cost etc. Then you can go further into the universities and look at the pros and cons of each, to then compare. By doing this, it may help you whittle it down to the one which fits your preferences better. For example, some people will want to weigh up the accommodation, the support available, facilities nearby, the town centre, so aspects like that. Hopefully this advice can give you a start on thinking decisively on what university may be better for you!

As for a placement year, it is great for experience and is very desirable on a CV as you will have great work experience. The university can help you find a placement by using a platform whereby the university advertise placement jobs on there. You can also self-source a placement, as long as it in the requirements for a placement year. Therefore, there is a very high chance you will gain a placement! As for living expenses in Guildford, will you be applying for a loan? If you have a budget for your money then your living expenses should be manageable while also having money to socialise with friends or do something you enjoy.

I hope this helps!

Becca
Hello,

I'm not from one of the Universities that you have listed, however, as a PhD student I might be able to offer some advice about choosing MSc programmes.

I found my masters year quite intense, with a lot more work than undergraduate level. However, for the most part, I found many of modules really interesting and relevant for my PhD, so actually getting work done was never too difficult. Therefore, if you haven't already, it might be worthwhile looking at the different modules for each of the universities and seeing which ones you find the most interesting! You also stated that in the future you'd like to do a PhD, could you reach out to any of the academics at the different universities to talk about PhD options in the future?

Hopefully this may help, I know it's nothing specific about each of the universities!

Charlotte
