Hey guys! I’m in a slightly different situation as I’m currently doing a foundation year and have applied to transfer to Year 1 at other universities!

I just got my first offer from City to study Psychology! Requirements are 70% overall in my foundation year with no less than 65% in each module. I only sent off my application on Tuesday so I’m very happy to have an offer!

I applied to Brunel, Kingston & Greenwich aswell and City & Brunel are my top two choices. With Law can you do internships or work experience whilst studying and do the university help you find these or do you have to find them yourself. Thank you😊

Hi @missversace

I hope you are doing well.

No matter what degree you study, you are able to undertake internships and work experience. It's really good to hear that you are already thinking about work experience as this puts you at an advantage when you graduate as employers look for experience along with your degree. The university offers internship vacancy and job vacancy on the Careers Website which you get access to using your City credentials. Although, you are advised to be active in searching for these internship and work experience.

I undertook work experience at a Family Law Firm during my first year and managed to secure an internship at a start-up Law firm. It's important that you stay active in sending out your CV to local law firms or even firms that you are interested in. Perhaps, you might want to get a part-time job as a paralegal or legal assistant at a law firm whether that's hughstreet or a City Law Firm.

Currently, I am unable to undertake work experience at a Law firm or look for internship as I now work part time as a Content Creator. I managed to get this job after successfully completing my Micro-Placement which is a programme offered by City, University though the employer offering you a job is not compulsory. Have a look at the Micro-Placement Programme as this is also another way the university offers to give you work experience at a job that is not traditionally associated to your degree.

I hope this helps.

Let me know if you have further questions and I will be happy to answer them.

Hi,

I recently got an offer to study Law at City and i hope you don't mind but i've had some burning questions and your just perfect to answer them. Firstly, is law as a degree as 'dull' as people make it look, initially i was so interested in the different modules but now all i hear about is the heaps of reading and the stereotype of law students gradually hating it. Of course i'm expecting the course to have some diffucult aspects but is it still interesting to study as a whole?

Also, in terms of career prospects, a lot of people have told me about the large number of law graduates with the small margin of actual barrister and solicitor jobs. is it really that hard to become one of above after a degree (i know a law degree can open up more careers but im talking about these in particular.

In terms of the social aspect, are law students actually as competitive as people say? Has this affected your ability or people you may know's ability to make friends etc?

Lastly, how is the process like after uni since i know the degree is basically the first step into becoming a solicitor/ barristor. In terms of funding, where to finding training contracts and stuff like that?

Sorry for the questions, but my teachers were useless in explaining since none studied law and your in exactly the position I want to be soon. Thank you dearly in advance !
Hi

I hope you are doing well! I would be glad to answer your questions and please submit more if anything pops up.

Regarding question 1, it varies from people to people. I am passionate about my degree as I have chosen something that I love and enjoy reading. As you progress onward from first year, the Law School expectation increases so in terms of reading, tutorial preparation or assessment. For example, currently I study Further Issues in Land Law and this week I am required to read a certain chapter of the book which has an average 50 pages. Bear this in mind that this is just for this week and in two weeks time the reading will change and I have a different reading requirement for my lecture. Also, this is only for one module so other modules may set the same amount of work or even more depending on the content and information required. I'm also going to mention that if you complete the law degree as with any other degree, there are going to be some modules which you do not enjoy. For example, I was not a massive fan of Criminal law hence I did not pick this as an elective in my second year. To sum, there is plenty of readings that is expected with the Law degree. However, this sets you up nicely for a career in law where you are expected to read your clients cases or any relevant legislation which may be even longer.

Regarding question 2, there is a lot of students that undertake the LLB Law course and there are only certain number of barrister and solicitor jobs available. The legal market is oversaturated so it makes it very competition to secure a pupilage or a training contract. That said, it is not impossible to get either of these. The average age to qualify as a solicitor is 29 so although you may not get your dream job after you graduate, you still should carry on and apply even if you get rejected. Have a look at City Course Data to see where city students have gone after graduating. As you mentioned correctly, a Law degree opens you up to many more careers. There are also other career options available in the legal market such as a legal assistant or a paralegal position which will help you make a nice transition once you secure a training contract or pupillage.

Law students are competitive when it comes to opportunities as students will want to improve and enhance their CV as this will help them stand out from the rest. This has not affected my ability to make friends or attend social events. For example, I am a Communication Officer for Network Society so I schedule events. Also, when it comes to socialising with friends then I make time out of my schedule. It's really important to be organised when undertaking a degree because if you fall behind then it makes it difficult to catch up but even make full use out of tutorials. For example, I work part time 3 days a week so these days I do not do any university work. The rest of the days I will spend completing my lecture notes, prep work for tutorials and readings. I try to keep my Sunday's free to prevent myself from burning out.

City, University provides students with a personal tutor who you can contact and book meeting to discuss about your career and any help you may need. We also offer a careers service team who you can book to check over your CV, applications or plan your career with them. The route to qualify as a solicitor is changing. Have a look at this website which tells us how to qualify as a solicitor or barrister. There are funding available to help you complete the Legal Practice Course which is the next step after completing your LLB Law degree. For example, the Law Society offer the Diversity Access Scheme. There is also Bar Course Scholarships offered by the Inner Temple. When it comes to finding training contracts, I suggest looking at Law Careers which lists out deadlines for various firms that are offering training contract. They also offer a pupillage search on where you can complete your pupillage.

Finally, I recommend reading the LawCareers Handbook which provides a lot of information reading training contract, pupillage, different sectors in law and the different firms.

I really hope this helps. Again, if you have further questions then just submit them and I will be happy to answer them.
