How do UCAS referee statements work?

How do UCAS referee statements work?

I'm in Year 12 and I want to know how this works. Do I have any control over this and what would they include? (e.g I heard they would include if you were a prefect but would they include things like subject awards from the school etc?). Will I know what this says?

We weren't allowed to read our references, but what our school would do would get statements from all the subject teachers and our form tutor and mush them together. We got asked if there was anything we wanted them to include (e.g. subject specific awards, prefect, extenuating circumstances) but apart from that it was all down to the teacher
(The process will differ between schools though)
