The Undergraduate University Application Process Explained

It’s that time of year where making an application to study at university might be on your radar. Over the recent months you may have researched into a variety of different courses that you are interested in, or even travelled to various universities across the UK to visit an Open Day. Now you may be at the stage where you are ready to make your application. So, what’s next and how can you do that?

All undergraduate applications in the UK are controlled and managed via UCAS, the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service. This is a unique online process where you can lodge all your applications for the various universities and courses you are interested in and effectively track the progress of said applications.
1. The first step is to register with UCAS via UCAS Hub.

2. Next, you’ll be required to answer some specific questions. At this stage you will need to provide an up-to-date email address (I’d recommended you to use a personal email, rather than your school or college one, as you will need to keep up to date with your application progress even after you have completed your qualifications), declare your personal circumstances and your financial situation.

3. The third section requires you to provide information on your education. You must list all of your qualifications, even if you haven’t received your results yet, you are still in the process of studying for a future exam, or even if you didn’t complete a course.
4. The fourth stage requires you to declare information about your work history. At this stage, you might not have much to state in this section, but any job or volunteering work you have done is extremely valuable so make sure you add all the experience you have.
5. After this, you will have reached arguably the most important section, choosing your 5 courses and universities. Your choices do not have to be at the same university, or the same subject area. The order that you select them in also does not matter at this stage.

- You may reach this stage and still feel unsure as to what universities or courses you’d like to choose. It’s important to remember that this is a normal feeling and many other students will be in the same position as you.

- Here at Swansea, there are many avenues you can take to seek help with making these choices. We have an admissions team who can be reached via live chat or phone, and we also have faculty support staff to help you with more specific course related queries if needed. What’s more, we also have lots of students, including myself, who are happy to help and provide more information on the student experience.

- As a student who went through the UCAS application process in 2021, I understand how daunting it can be. It’s important to remember that there are so many people who would be willing to help you, all it takes is just for you to reach out and ask for help!

6. The penultimate stage of the application requires you to write a personal statement. While this can be very difficult if you are applying for a variety of different courses across many different universities, it can really make a difference to your application as admissions staff will always look to see your enthusiasm for the course/university/further education in general. More advise on writing a personal statement from a current student can be found here - https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=7338748

7. The final stage requires you to add the UCAS application reference. Here, you will need to provide the contact details for the person who has agreed to provide a reference for you. Ideally, this should be a person from your school or college that you are currently attending or have recently left. For some, this however, might be a recent employer. Your application will not be able to be submitted until your referee attaches your reference.

I hope this guide will help you in some way. Good luck with your application!
