LAE Stratford 2022

Hello! I'm thinking of going to LAE Stratford - I have some questions I'd like to ask about there.

- When does the day start and end?
- Do you get study periods? If you do can you go home to study?
- At what pace do teachers go at, especially when you start in yr12 ( I want to do chem, bio, psych, Philo+ethics)
- If I get an offer, my journey there would be around 57min. I want to know from anyone studying at LAE who lives abit far whether it's worth it?
- What type of opportunities and trips are offered?
- Is it true that you get free breakfast?

Thank you!

im currently applying to lae so will start next year but this is what ik
1. you can find their daily timetable on their website
2. you do get study periods but not many as you have 4 subjects and idk if you can go out in them but i know that u can leave school during lunchtime
3. from what ive heard teachers start at a good pace and it carries on however you need to do the hours of work at home or you will be left behind and also teachers are very supportive and u get 1-1 tutor sessions where you can go over your work
4. i dont think it would be a good idea to travel so far purely because it will waste a lot of your time and you will have to wake up really early in the long run that 1 hour adds up to many hundreds of hours which you could use to study.
5. they offer a scholars programmes for top 50 y12 students woth highest gcse results, this includes 100-200 pounds and trips and programmes, theres medicine pathway programmes and you can read about those stuff on the website (thats what their website is for)
6. yes u get free breakfast i think wich starts from 8:00-8:20

Hey, I'm a prefect at LAE Stratford! Regarding your questions:

1. School will always start at 8:20 in Year 12 - the time it ends varies on the day. For instance, on Monday, Wednesday + Thursday, you'll generally end at 3/4 because of assembly, clubs or sports! On Tuesday and Friday, you'll end at different times in relation to what extra-cirriculars you pick!
2. We do get study periods! In Year 12 you only have one study period on a Friday, but after dropping your 4th A-Level, you have up to 7 free periods in a week. You're only allowed to stay at home for your free periods in Year 13 as far as I'm aware.
3. The pace of the teachers definitely depends on the subject. I predominantly take essay-based subjects and will say that some are definitely more structured than others. Different teachers in depts have varied styles of teaching, so there'll always be something for you i.e. there's always one teacher you'll feel comfortable with in your subject and can always ask them questions!
4. Most people commute to LAE - I have a lot of friends who aren't from East London! My commute is roughly an hour too but that didn't really bother me considering it used to take me 1.5 hours to get to my secondary school. If you're going to the school for the opportunities available I'd say it's definitely worth it.
5. Various opportunities are offered! As I mentioned previously, you have compulsory clubs on a Wednesday and this includes learning languages such as Japanese, baking club, debate society etc. We also have compulsory sports for all Year 12s on a Thursday - you get an option to switch sports each term! Regarding Tuesdays, after finishing up an MPQ, you have the choice between undertaking an EPQ or having academic enrichment sessions. LAE also puts a lot of stress on work experience placements + volunteering! For half of the academic year on a Friday you'd either be volunteering at a local school providing academic mentoring sessions, or you could find a work experience placement of your own! For the rest of the year, you'd be put in a specific career-driven pathway i.e. MDV, Law, Finance etc and will have the opportunity to listen from ex-alumni and specialists in that field! As a final point, LAE has a series called LAEcutres in which each Wednesday there'll be a talk given by a University professor or professional in different fields - this is great for your CV! Regarding trips, LAE does have quite a few trips but it is heavily dependent on your subject choices. People have flown out to Ireland + Poland and there have also been trips to Thorpe Park, the Zoo and Parliament. There's also a trip to Oxford University for your last day of Year 12 which is always fun!
6. Yes, free breakfast is available! The selection is generally cereal, bagels, yogurt + sometimes fruit salad (i haven't seen it around this year though!) People who have free periods in the morning are allowed to utilise the free breakfast system even after 8:20!

I hope this provides you with a bit more insight - don't hesitate to reach out!

Hi, I just wanted to clarify some things specifically about your subjects, I'm a y12 at lae and do bio, chem, maths and philosophy. Chem you're going to be eased in really well, Bio you're going to struggle for the first topic or 2 but once you get the understanding of the first few topics, you're going to find it way easier going into further modules but def my hardest a level nonetheless, philosophy has the nicest teachers but you're going to be so confused - by the time you finish a topic, you'll understand the topic but probably not whilst you're going through it. I don't do psych but I've heard from friends that it's pretty okay. Anyways, I can't say lae is easy but you're going to be supported really well if you decide to come.
