Msc in Renewable energy overall expenses

Hi There,
I got an offer to study full-time Master of Science in Renewable energy for September 2023 Intake in cranfield university a. The tuition fees is for the course is almost £25000. I have no idea about other expenses for completing master. My question is, how much amount in US dollar should I show in bank account so that the government would issue me visa and the amount suffice my expenses?

Hi @s427928,

UK visa requirements are notoriously complex and, as far as my understanding goes, can vary depending on individual circumstances (your country of origin, the reason you are entering the UK, how long you intend to stay, the type of visa being applied for etc.).

Given the sheer number of variables, I would recommend that you seek specialist advice on this from your university. They'll almost certainly have staff who are well versed in current UK visa processes and whose job it is to assist prospective international students in navigating the visa process. At Keele, for example, we have dedicated staff based in the UK and work with partner agencies in other countries to assist international students in applying to us.

In terms of thinking about your expenses in the UK more widely, you'll need to ensure you have sufficient funds to pay your course fees, accommodation costs (and utilities if these are not included in the rent), phone/internet provider (again, if not included in your rent), TV license (if needed), food, transport to/from university and in the local area, and money for course materials/fieldwork trips, socialising, clothing and other sundries.

Making a list of all your current and anticipated expenditure should help you work out both an overall budget for the primary expenses (course fees, visas, travel to/from the UK, initial course materials, any deposits for accommodation etc.) and a monthly budget for your ongoing expenses whilst you're studying (rent, bills, monthly travel, food etc.). There are several budgeting tools you can use to work this out - I usually recommend the one from Citizens Advice (https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/debt-and-money/budgeting/budgeting/work-out-your-budget/) - and your university should be able to give you an idea of average living costs in the area. There's also some useful guidance at https://www.savethestudent.org/money/student-budgeting/what-do-students-spend-their-money-on.html

Your university should also be able to advise on what support they can provide. Many universities offer assistance with loans for computer equipment and software, for example, or ensure that key course text books are available in he library and/or to bulk buy at a discount. They may also offer bursaries, grants, and other forms of financial assistance for students who meet certain requirements. So it's worth having a chat with them to discuss your options.

Hope that helps!

Hi @s427928

Congrats on getting a great offer!

As for the visa, you should be able to get help from our student immigration team, I’ll leave a link here for their info page which includes their contact details:
https://www.cranfield.ac.uk/about/international-students/visas-and-immigration
As Keele said already, it’s a complex process! So do accept the help 😊

I also found it hard to imagine what my budget would be before I moved to the UK too. Thankfully, Cranfield provides a great breakdown of the costs of living in this link:
https://www.cranfield.ac.uk/som/why-cranfield-school-of-management/life-at-cranfield/living-expenses
Of course, they are all estimates and prices will change year to year, but it is a great place to start.
There is also a student blog on the cost of living here:
https://blogs.cranfield.ac.uk/life-on-campus/budgeting-university-i-funded-course-living-expenses-year/

Best of luck with everything, and don’t hesitate to reach out on the Cranfield TSR page, or here, if you have any additional questions!
