How to become a primary school teacher UK?

I'm about to graduate with a degree in History from UoM. Im interested in teaching but unsure of the next step to take. Ideally i'd like to work/earn whilst getting my qualification. I've heard about salaried teacher training. Not sure if I need to do a PGCE? Or if I can become qualified another way? Any advice appreciated.

To my understanding, you need a QTS qualification/training. Anything that doesn't have this won't allow you to teach in UK or British schools (including those abroad).

Whilst you can do a bachelor's in education, it's another 3 years you don't need to do.

You would ideally go for a PGCE specialising in primary education (not secondary or further) with QTS, and these last for 2 years. These would be postgrad courses, and you can just google for them online.
The alternative will be the Scottish version (PGDE), but these would require you to have prior experience in the classroom (I don't understand that either).

I've heard that there are QTS training available that don't require you to complete a qualification, but I haven't come across one.

I would say the PGCE is the easiest and fastest option. You might want a second opinion.

Hello @epicgang432,

Fantastic to learn that you are approaching your graduation. I hope you achieve the classification you are targeting.

With regards to teacher training, I would strongly encourage you to request a Get Into Teaching adviser. They are all qualified and experienced teachers who offer free and impartial advice/support to anyone considering a career in teaching. They are specialised in helping candidates with their application (including help finding the right course, for you), personal statement, and preparing for interviews.

In addition, your adviser can help you to get some school experience, to make sure that teaching is the right career for you.

I wish you the very best moving forwards.

Tom
