Advice for getting into investment banking with a physics degree

I am about to finish my second year of a physics degree and I am thinking about career options for when I graduate. I want to get into investment banking and would appreciate any advice on how to successfully pursue this. I have been applying for various internships since the beginning of this academic year but so far I have been unsuccessful.

I am at a Russell group university and expect to finish with a 1st class degree or a 2:1 at the very least. I come from a pretty average background so no private education or opportunities in the nepotism department.

I would also like to know if a masters degree is essential (not sure if I can afford) and what can I do in the summer to help my CV if I don't secure an internship.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
