Keeping RCCP/AHS registration whilst pursuing research or PHD opportunities?

I am currently an NHS clinician in a healthcare science related field and hold registration with the Registration Council for Clinical Physiologists / Academy of Healthcare science. I am eager to pursue PhD or other research opportunities in neuroscience or a related field to develop my skills and competencies.

At this point in time, I am unsure whether I will return to clinical practice post completion of further studies or remain in academia. Would it be a good idea to keep my clinical registration should I choose to leave the NHS and pursue doctorate programmes ? I am not too sure if cancelling my registration during my studies would allow me to rejoin should I decide to return to healthcare practice.

Any advice from clinicians past or present would be greatly appreciated.
